Which I agree with, take your cousin up on the offer in Baltimore and give Maya & yourself the opportunity at a great change in your life.

But...does FI/BF, even as horrible as he's been, have any rights?  What does clizh need to do before taking LO across state lines to ensure FI/BF doesn't turn this into an even worse situation. I'm asking because I'm hoping someone knows and so we all can help her get out of this situation.

    Those are some really good points, Gnome.  I hope someone has the right legal answers for her and her situation.

    I believe since she's not married she has all legal rights towards her child even if he's listed on the birth certificate because that doesn't really establish paternity.  And as her mother, she doesn't have to give him visitation unless he goes to court and mandates it.  I'm taking this info from an episode of Teen Mom, so I'm definitely not an expert by any means!

    I've lurked on the Single Parents board (which might be a good board for her to visit) and from what I've read there, he can't take LO since she is BF. She needs to go to the courthouse like today and file for custody and child support.

    Ok found an article that deals with child custody in NY...I'm pretty sure she's from there so this would be the info she needs.  It follows almost identically to what I said unless her BF signed the Paternage Rights document in the hospital he has absolutely no rights to the child.  And unless you ask the hospital for the Paternage Rights document, they don't just hand it out to anyone.
