Re: pumping after bf..low supply HELP

  • Im going through the same! I have tried, and they might work for you, Mothers Milk and Fenugreek. The are both in the Natural section. MM is in tea form and to me smells like Lavender tea but kept him awake in the middle of the night. I just started the Fenugreek in herbal pill form but I am starting to smell the herbs which are coming through my pores, BMilk and he smells as well. Im not sure I like it but you could try and see how they effect you. I am still working on the pump issue myself, sorry I cant help there but I hope this might help in another way :)

  • I have found drinking much water & eating much oatmeal helps.  Also, it took a week or so after adding a pump session (I pump 4 days a week after first am feeding) to feel like I saw an increase in overall supply.
  • How old is the baby?  If you feel pinching you would probably need a bigger breast shield not smaller.  My nipple shields were that way.  Idk how a manual works but 10 minutes with that might not be the same as 10 minutes with an electric featuring a letdown cycle, kwim.  BUT if you're only pumping after nursing your baby might just be a really efficient sucker and that's great!

  • I got 21 in sheilds and am very happy I did. If you have a smaller nipple and a lot of your boob is being sucked into the sheild I would at least try the smaller size. It has made a difference to me. And, inorder to build my supply with the pump I am pumping every 2 hours 8:30, 10:30, 12:30 and 2:30. I leave work at 4 and nurse as much as DD will in the evenings as this is way better at building the supply than the pump is. I would also stick to the every 2 hours pump for a week or 2 even if you are getting nothing out keep the pump on there for 10 or 15 minutes. The sucking action should signal your body to make more. Its hard to go back up once you have dropped but it can be done. All week I have only been able to get like 1 oz total from a half hour of pumping and that is using a hospital grade pump. This morning at my 8:30 session I was able to get 3.5 oz so I am seeing an improvement but it will take deadication on my part to keep it up. I am also taking the fenugreek and am not sure yet if its working. HTH and good luck.

  • Your ticker says 42 weeks pregnant; how old is your baby?  You say pumping after breastfeeding; if you're pumping right after feeding you may only get a little bit of milk and that's normal.  Your body takes time to adjust too, so depending on how long you've been doing this you may just not have caught up yet.  Size 21 is smaller than size 24; right?  If it's pinching you may want to go up a size.
  • I think it's fairly common to not get anything or much from pumping if you are new to it and you also breastfeed full time. Is there anything else making you think your supply is low such as LO not gaining weight or not enough diapers? I had the same concern but I'm producing PLENTY as indicated by my baby's weight gain and 15 diapers a day. I am lucky to get 1 oz from a pumping session.
