There are a ton of baby gates out there and I know you should pick one based on your specific needs, but can you share what kind you got and what you like/dislike about it? Thanks!!
We bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000U5FOT2/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details and I love it. It has so many uses. We have it open with three pieces to block the opening between the sofas. We attached all 6 and blocked the christmas tree as well. You can use it as a stand alone, a playpen, or mount it to the wall. The gate is a little tricky to open at first but once you get the hang of it, you can do it one handed. The best part is he will never be able to open that gate.
Out of both, I LOVE the first one. It was the best since it has so many options.

sorry I don't know how to make it clicky. Looks like they are on a good sale right now. I think we paid $80-$90 a piece for ours. We LOVE them, especially since they retract they aren't always in the way if they're open.

We also bought this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VNKLHA/ref=oh_o04_s01_i00_details I like that it is a pressure mount and it won't ruin my wall. The door is REALLY easy to open. The down side, our friend's 2 year old was over and she was able to open the gate.

We have two flights of stairs in our house and we use these at the top and bottom:
