Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Has anyone tried Gymboree?

Being home all day with LO is getting a little boring, and I need a change of pace. I also want him to get different kinds of stimualtion than the toys we have at home. Have any of you been to a Gymboree class? Thoughts?

Re: Has anyone tried Gymboree?

  • We didn't do gymboree, but Kindermusik with my older daughter.  We started when she was 4 months old to get out of the house and interact with other babies and moms. It was great and we continued until she was 2.  Also, check out momsclub.org.

  • Personally I found Gymboree really cheesy and kind of annoying. It could have just been the place we went, but the leader was way over the top and ridiculously goofy and even my DS was giving him the side eye like he was nuts. I took him when he was about 18 months and I was expecting more of a gymnastics experience, but it was more like singing nursery rhymes and they use this clown doll and everyone is supposed to follow the clown around. I don't know, it just wasn't our thing. I think you can try a class for free to see if you like it.

We much prefer Little Gym, Kindermusic or just the local library play/story time.

  • I wouldn't bother at your son's age. It's not cheap (over $15/class) and I think he's too young to get anything out of it. Maybe at like 6 months? For now I'd stick to something free like library story time.

FWIW I never felt like Gymboree was a great place to meet people. You don't sign up for a set class, just go whenever you want, so the group can vary week to week.

  • I guess I'm the only one who loves Gymboree. DS is 5 months old and seems to enjoy it. Plus, all of the moms in our class are regulars and we go out for coffee and lunch dates throughout the week. I'm sure it just depends on who goes to your classes. We really like it so in my opinion it's worth a try. Go online and sign up for a class...the first time is free.
  • We took her to a Gymboree class last weekend (the 0-6 mo class). She looooved it. They used parachutes, sang songs, tracked scarves, blew bubbles, things like that. Nothing mind-blowing to an adult, but my baby was going nuts for it, smiling and laughing the whole time. There was a free trial offer, so we didn't pay for it. The cost is kind of absurd. You can "join", and it costs something like $70/ month, plus a start-up fee. Who do they think they are, Equinox? It doesn't make any sense for an infant, because you wouldn't be able to use most of their equipment. But I do recommend trying the trial class. Also, they said the classes are very different for 6 months and up, so maybe that would be more worth it, I dunno. I'm pretty sure you can get a trial class for every different class, so you could try it now and then again at 6 months.
  • I started DS in Gymboree at 6 weeks. I definitely think babies get something out of it this young. Try a free class to see how you like it, but I love our Gymboree class.

And we do have set classes, so we see the same ppl every week.

  • Maybe you could check local churches for mom's groups? I just started going to one. Most of the kids are a bit older than my son and walking around, but he was definitely very attentive to what they were doing and acted like he wanted to play with them. Hopefully he will be crawling soon and that will work out better.
