How do you know when LO is "ready"?

How do you know when LO is ready to change sleeping arrangements?

Phin has been sleeping in his RnP next to our bed for 10 weeks.  He sleeps like a champ and is comfortable and happy.  The last few nights we have tried getting him to sleep in his PnP next to our bed in hopes of soon transitioning him to his crib.  We thought the PnP would be a good medium between the RnP and his crib.  He falls asleep there okay, but he is certainly not happy and wakes himself up all night long. We're all miserable.

I don't know when a good time or age is to transition. I'm sure it varies depending on the kid, but for those of you who have successfully transitioned, how did you know it was time?  What did you do to help with the move?

  • I'm debating this myself. LO STTN in the PnP napper every night. Daytime naps in the crib are always short cat naps, I'm wondering about transitioning too.

  • I guess we were lucky, but LO transitioned to his crib in one night.  One night he was in his bassinet next to our bed, and the next night I put him down in his crib and he has been sleeping there ever since.  We did it quite early though, I think it was at about three weeks old.

  • We moved DS from the bassinet to the crib a week and a half ago. We did it on a Friday in case he had a bad night we weren't going to be at work early. I slept with DS swaddle the night before and used that one to swaddle him. We did our normal routine. Bath massage slow dance book and in the crib. He fell asleep right away. Whined in his sleep at 2am but didn't wake up fully. I went in put my hand on his chest and told him I loved him. He calmed down and slept til 6. He has been sleeping there ever since. Most nights he is totally fine.
  • We moved DS to his crib on NYE (he was previously in a RnP next to our bed). He transitioned fine. I did put him in his crib for naps prior to moving him in there overnight, not sure that it helped, but I know it didn't hurt.

I decided to move him over when he found his fingers. He would suck on them in his sleep and wake me up!

  • I haven't moved DS2 to his crib uet, but probably will soon. I think this early it's more about when you're ready! LO will pretty much sleep anywhere, but for now I like having him close to me. When I start to feel more comfortable leaving him by himself, I'll move him to crib. With him still nursing alot at night it is definitely more convenient for me to have him right there, though.

  • We transitioned from the bassinet in our room to the crib after Christmas.  He was sleeping well in the bassinet and we just tried it cold turkey to see how he would do...he was fine right away so we kept up with it!  It definitely helped us sleep better because every little noise he made would wake us up when he was right next to us, and I think it helped him as well, because any noise we would make would disturb him as well.  Good luck!

  • We just recently transitioned Addy over, and we figured it out because she kept trying to straighten herself out flat and would fuss while sleeping. We just popped her in the crib one night and she's been just fine with it.

  • We transitioned her to her room in her RnP without a hitch. After about a week of that, we transitioned her to her crib. We did incline her crib (put blankets under the mattress and rolled up towels around her sides and bottom of her feet to get her use to it. Then we gradually took those things away.

    Good Luck!

  • We tend to do incremental changes, so the PnP seems like a great idea.  But I'd probably start him off in the PnP and then move him back to the RnP if/when he starts waking up.  I would expect the time in the PnP to get longer and the time in the RnP to get shorter over time.  We weren't fully transitioned to the crib with DS until he was 14 months old :)

  • We did naps first and then transitioned night sleeping.

  • We moved DD into her room at 4 or 5 weeks in her RnP. She stayed in the RnP for another 3 or 4 weeks before we tried the crib at night. I was trying to get her to take naps in her crib first. New Year's Day night we decided to give the crib a shot at night, she slept 7 straight. Now she sleeps 9-11 hours. Good luck.

  • Mine transitioned in one night too, I think it was definitely harder on me than her. But in her crib she has to be swaddled where she didn't have to be before.

She was about seven weeks when we moved her to her crib, and she slept with us in our bed before.

This exactly! We put DD in her crib at about 2 weeks and I was so nervous because she was used to the vibrating bassinet, but she slept like a rock. She was so good up until about a week and a half ago, now she won't sleep long at all in her crib, only in her swing... it's incredibly irritating and makes it impossible for me to get sleep. So I've resorted to putting her down in her crib, she will wake up within an hour screaming so I'll let her nurse to calm her down then she will flip if I put her back in her crib so I have to take her into the living room into her swing where she will sleep for about 4-5 hours then wake up to nurse which I will do laying down in our bed then when she dozes off I'll put her in her crib again and she'll sleep there normally for another hour or two until she's up for the day... it's a PITA

  • Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions.  We are going to try again with the PnP today (DH is home) and throughout this weekend while we can take naps and relax in case the nights are restless.  I know the longer we wait, the harder it will be on all of us.

we are totally fearing the transition to crib, shes almost too long long for the bassinet, so we are going to put the PNP in our room. and will probably do this sort of transition to the crib.
