Any EBFers Exercising in the AM?

So, C eats for the last time around 6:30pm, goes to bed no later than 7:30pm.  She sleeps 11ish hours (don't slap me), and I wake her up at 6:15am so I can nurse her and hang out with her before I go to work.  I just started back at work this week and I'm really having trouble figuring out how the heck I'm ever going to fit in exercise.  I'd like to do it first thing in the morning (like 5:00ish), but when I wake up my jugs are enormous and hard as rocks.  This morning I got up early and walked on the treadmill for 20ish minutes, which I figure is better than nothing - but it felt like if I pushed it any harder I'd shoot milk across the room.

I miss running and know I can do it on the weekends, but I'm just looking for any suggestions/advice.  This whole "life as a working mama thing" is quite an adjustment!

  • Can you pump off the engorgement and feed her off both sides post workout?

Well that solution just seems too easy.

I'm too lazy to do that, though, because that would mean waking up even earlier in order to pump.  And I refuse to set my alarm any earlier than 5:00!  Even with getting up at 5:00, by the time I put my clothes on and workout I only get about 20-25 minutes before I have to shower to get ready before I get C up at 6:15.

    I'm being difficult.  Sorry.

  • Could you work out at night instead?  I haven't really gotten back into working out, but my working-mom schedule would never permit working out in the AM.  I already get up between 4:45-5 AM just to pump, feed LO, etc., etc. before work.  So nighttime workouts would be the only option for me.

I guess I could, especially if I'm wanting to run.  Unfortunately I'm now such a lush I enjoy an adult beverage or two in the evenings and drinking > exercising.

I hear that.  For me, a half hour on the couch with DH > exercising ... which is why I've worked out exactly twice since DD was born. Embarrassed

  • I can't imagine running first thing in the AM before a feeding!! Wear a couple sports bras maybe?  Do you go to the gym or exercise at home?  You could change to the precore or a stationary bike or weights - something less jiggly?  I'm a runner too, so I sympathize with wanting to get back into it.

Just wondering: I had read that exercising can reduce the milk supply - true?  is this just because we need to keep the calories up?  If I exercise and still eat a lot would that suffice?  I would really like to tone up this flabby body of mine, but want to make sure my supply stays in tact.  I did the Jillian DVD for 3 weeks and it was totally working, but then my LO went through a growth spurt and was nursing more frequently, so I stopped the DVD so I wouldn't affect the milk supply.  Am I being stupid?

  • First of all....*slap*!

Now, my suggestion is to pump a little before you head to the gym. I can't imagine going to the gym first thing in the morning without pumping...ouch! If you're anything like me, you could probably pump and freeze a few ounces and still have plenty for LO when you get home from the gym. The other option is to pump it all and give LO the bottled BM when you get home.

Edit: I just read your responses and it seems you don't want to get up earlier to pump. My only other suggestion is to pump before you go to bed (I'm guessing it's much later than LO goes to bed.) By then you should have a good amount to pump and store and hopefully be less engorged in the morning, but still have plenty for LO.

When I was still on maternity leave, I was working out pretty hard core (running and Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30) and saw no dip in my milk supply.  Read more on kellymom.com.

  • I EBF and exercise in the morning.  I do bootcamp M/W/F from 530am - 630am.  I wake up at 4:30am, change, pump, and head to bootcamp.  As soon as I get back from the gym I wash off and feed DS as soon as he wakes up.

    1. I've never noticed a dip in my milk supply (I've read that exercise does not effect it).  I generally pump about 8-10 oz every morning before I leave.

    2. DS' wake up time is unpredictable so DH will feed DS some of what I pump if he wakes up while I'm gone.  Sometimes he's gotten up just before I was going to get up so I feed him, then pump, then head to bootcamp.

    3. It sucks.  I curse myself for signing up for bootcamp every time I get up in the morning.  BUT, I get up (because I paid for it) and I go, and I feel really good about myself for the rest of the day.  And I'm more likely to avoid bad foods because I don't want to waste what I worked hard for.

    4. I can't possibly imagine going to bootcamp without having pumped first.  I'd probably give myself a black eye and boob stains during the jumping jacks.  I would pump and then feed your LO when she wakes up.  If she doesn't seem to be getting enough, you can always give her some of what you pumped before your workout.

Have you considered enlisting a workout buddy?  Sometimes it can help you get to the gym if you have a friend to keep the pressure on.

That last post was actually me on my mom's computer. How the heck does she gave an account? Anyway...just wanted to clarify.

HA!  I thought it was so weird that this random woman just jumped into posting with this super-detailed look at her workout schedule. Big Smile

  • My goal is to start to work out in the AM , but I can't seem to wake up until I absolutley to so I can get ready to go to work.  And then when I tell myself that I was will out in the morning DD wakes up at 4am and then I am super tired and go back to bed.  Maybe I'll try to think of you all in the morning and that will get me up.

The pumping at night suggestion seems like a great idea.
