My first son could be up 8 times a night! No joke! Every hour! I was a mess! Then when he was 18 months (still not sleeping through the night) he got sick we found out he had some issues with dairy that was making him quite sick! At the time I was 4 months prego with our 2nd son. The doctors encouraged me to go dairy free, I continued with that till I was done nursing #2. Totally diffrent! The kids slept and was really a piece of cake! If only someone would have told me milk can make your baby sick!!!??? Good Luck! If you do decide to take dairy our really read your lables and make sure you get it all out! There are alot of great products out there.
Age was the only thing that helped me, I tried just about every thing and when she was 8-9 months I was exhausted from all the efforts and tried the one thing I thought I would never do bed-share! it instantly (like the night I started) was better she went form waking at least every 2 hours sleeping 5-8 hour stretches, I was so relieved.
Big things that interrupt her sleep are: teething, illness (even just a cold) any outside added stress (like traveling)my daughter is sensitive to any change and also is 'high needs' I keep my sanity by sleeping when I need, getting my own time and filling my own 'love cup'.
Like pp said some babies have a harder time, my daughter is that person she still wakes 2X and she is almost 2.5. It helped me to realize that this is her personality I can only help her I can't force her (I tried CIO and it was horrible I don't recommend it, especially for a kid like mine!) Once I started accepting she would wake me I felt better about it, I have heard that the majority of children under 5 wake up at night and I also hear this from parents left and right.. so it is normal!
Re: if your LO was up many times per night...
Things improved up to about 4 months just by virtue of age, then they got worse until about 8 months, and then we sleep trained.
I do think it's good to get into a bedtime and nap routine, be consistant, etc. early... but some babies just sleep better than others.
