Can anyone spare some reassurance? (long)

Hi ladies,

I'm looking for a little reassurance... maybe some opinions too. I may also delete this later because I don't want my family to get into any fights etc over this.

Firstly, this morning, just before I got up I think I felt the baby moving. (I'm just shy of 17 weeks). I could feel something gliding across my stomach, which is not a feeling I have ever experienced in terms of gut related sensations...

Today was my grandfather's funeral. There are cousins whom I have this grandfather in common with that I rarely see (twice in 10 years before this) because of a pretty big and drama-filled falling out across my dad's family. Still my grandmother had informed my cousins that I was pregnant at some point.

One of my cousins came up and very lightly, jokingly, "punched" (more like barely a tap but with a closed fist) my stomach to greet me. He had forgotten I was pregnant. I pulled away fairly quickly (and punched him back a bit harder in the side). He has since quite profusely apologised.

I know I shouldn't expect to feel consistent movement from baby just yet, but now I'm worried I don't seem to be feeling anything except little bumps which I can't tell if they are digestion or baby related movements.

I am not due to see my OB until 2/18 (after my a/s scan on 2/15) but I'm wondering if it's worth seeing if I can squeeze in tomorrow. Im not in any pain or discomfort, there has been no cramping etc...There is a fee to see him (assuming I could even get in) but he does and ultrasound and heartbeat check every appointment, and I'm wondering if that would put my mind more at ease.

So I guess what I'm asking is what would you do?

Re: Can anyone spare some reassurance? (long)

  • I personally wouldn't worry about it.  At 17 weeks the feeling of movement is inconsistant at best for a lot of people, also the number of times I have gotten a knee or an elbow to my belly from one of my other two kids trying to climb into my lap etc. is high, and is probably a harder knock to the belly that your cousins playful hello.

If it was me I really wouldn't worry about it, but if you tend to be a worrier I would call and get a HB check.  Sorry about how your day went yesterday, funerals can be really tough especially when there is family drama involved.

  • I would definitely agree with PP - and in fact I had a sort of similar situation and everything was fine. I was playing with our dog on Tuesday and he jumped up and put this paws on my belly, it was definitely harder than a tap. I already had a doctor appointment scheduled for yesterday - the doctor found the hb right away and said it was really nothing to worry about if it happened again. She said baby is well protected and it would take a lot to harm them from the outside.

Hope this puts your mind at ease somewhat, but honestly if you're still worried, call the doctor - no need to be stressed if you don't have to be :) GL!

  • Oh no, no wonder you are freaked!! You might call your doctor for reassurance, but 17 week is still early.  Also, feeling the baby depends on where the placenta is.  With Emily, it was in front, and I almost never felt her until the end.  I am sure baby is fine, he/she is SO protected in there, but really, if it makes you feel better, definitely call - the piece of mind is worth the fee.

    hugs!

  • With my first pregnancy, my midwife told me, anything hitting my belly area would hurt me more than the baby because they are soo insulated and protected.

I also have a 10 month old who uses me as a jungle gym!

  • I took a nice spill on the ice the other day. I am 17 weeks along, and that day I felt what I thought was a lot of baby movement. I didn't hit my belly, but I hit the ground hard *my knee and hands look like I was hand mixing in blue food coloring*.

The next day, baby didn't move at all for hours and hours and hours. normally baby moves just after breakfast which is a sugar high for both of us. I was getting pretty worried, apparently baby was just asleep because when I got on the bus to go home, there was a little flurry of activity, followed by nothing for the rest of the night.

This morning, baby had crammed itself on one side of my body and didn't shift out of that spot till I got up and jogged to the bus. Baby is fine. My knee is the only thing that probably isn't. So I wouldn't worry especially if he didn't hit you hard at all.

  • I would stop worrying.

I've been feeling my little one move for a few weeks now and still don't feel the baby every day. Also, my dog steps on my stomach all the time when I'm laying down and she's 11 pounds. I'm pretty sure a downward force of 11 lbs is more than a light punch.

  • remember that your baby is floating in a suspension of liquid along with the muscles of your uterus so things like that are all "absorbed" by that protective barrier.  Just imagine if you lived in a fluid-filled plastic bubble and somebody punched it.  Probably would just annoy you more than hurt, especially if you are not experiencing any bleeding or cramping.  But always go to the OB if you're worried.
