WWYD? (NBR, XP)

DH and I live with roommates.  Yes, I know... it's a terrible idea.  They consist of another unmarried/childless couple and a single guy, all of whom we've known for 3-10 years. 

The problem is the single male roommate.  We have been floating his electric and FiOS bills for 5 months now and all he has paid on time is his rent. Tonight we changed our password to the router, solving that problem.Are we within our rights as roommates to dispose of our problem and in the long run save ourselves the extra headache and money? 

Simply put:  Is it legal to kick out a roommate who pays his rent but none of his utilities?

    Tough one.  So he's paying his room, but not his board.  I guess if I were you, I would cut off all access to utilities or tell him that his rent payment is going to increase to cover the cost of his living with you.

    Do the other roommates feel the same way?  Have you had a roommate discussion about this?  If everyone is on the same page, maybe you all should ask him to leave.

    We're all together on this as a house.  We tried shutting off the breaker to his room, but our house is very oddly wired and his switch also controls the kitchen light and fridge.  Like I said, we changed the internet password so he has no access to it.

    Who's listed on the lease? If he isn't, then that gives more power on your side.  

    sadly, we're all on the lease.

  • Does it say anywhere on the lease that each tennant is responsible for his/her own share of rent AND utilities or are the utilities an understanding you have amongst yourselves?
