For those of you whose H has had more than one SA, I'm just wondering if you noticed a difference in his numbers if he abstained from sex for a longer period of time before giving his sample?
For his SA the lab said to abstain for 48 hours so that is what we did. I'm looking at the new RE's website and they say that you should abstain for 3 days. I'm doctor thought that the day difference might make the difference in the H's morph ( this is just my family doctor that I am talking about not even my obgyn) I don't really know if I believe that at all I think that he was just trying to not discourage us. Just wondering what your experiences were? Thanks ![]()
Re: SA ?
I think the word you're looking for is 'abstain', and yes, it made quite a difference... in count and motility. There was no difference in morph.
Low count, higher motility with <48 hrs. Highest count but low motility after abstaining for 6 days. We also did one with 3 days where count was midrange but motility was still low.
Lol whoops. Yes abstain is what I ment. I was trying to spell it obstain though and I think my phone auto corrected it. I'll fix it.
As far as the morph goes that is kinda what I was thinking that the morph % still wouldn't be any different.

There really is no 'best' time. When count goes up, motility goes down. Obviously that is a general statement and won't hold true every time, but it will on average. It depends what's important to you (count or motility).
Our first after 6 days abstinence had 30mil/mL, 60 million total. 35% motility. this is 21 million motile.
Our 2nd after about 40 hours had 12mil/mL, 25 million total. 51% motility. This is 13 million motile.
Our 3rd after about 3 1/2 days had 25mil/mL, 55 million total. 34% motility. This is 19 million motile.
So technically for us and looking only at these 3 samples, 6 days was best. But for the 3rd, if motility was already at 34% at 3 days, it would not have gone up if we waited 2-3 more days. Our forward progression was 2+ for the second sample and 1++ on the other two. I don't know if that makes up for having fewer motile or not, but maybe?
