Nursing mamas question

When did you introduce the bottle and how did it go? I was wanting to post this before I saw the new medela calm a bottle. Really excited about it since we messed up with getting DS1 nursing and so far we are doing well with DS2. Anyone regret introducing bottle?

Re: Nursing mamas question

  • Around 5 weeks and it went great. DS was not picky about bottle/nipple. I was terrified of him preferring the faster flow of a bottle to me, which is why I'm excited about that new Medela bottle.

My only regret (a BIG one) is that we didn't keep up with offering one bottle/day (mostly bc I SAH and nursing was so much easier) and at some point he decided the bottle was the enemy, which meant I couldn't be away from him. SO hard....I won't make that mistake again!!

  • I'm looking forward to be able to get away and let someone else feed him, but I don't want him to prefer it! At least that didn't happen to you august!

  • I know, I would have *died* if he hadn't wanted to nurse (OK, that's a little dramatic, but you know what I mean). But it was stressful for a while to not be able to be gone or worry that he was hungry if I was gone. :(

Hopefully these girls switch between bottle and breast like champs and love the boob and at least like the bottle, all of their baby days!

  • It was around 5-6 weeks and went well both times.  Both kids took to the first bottles we tried and went back and forth from bottle to boob fine.  Except that with DD I was able to quit work and we got lazy in the bottle-offering department (and because pumping sucks), she eventually only wanted me again.  I have no doubt that it was our fault that I became re-attached to her 24/7 for a while.
  • This is just my experience, so take it or leave it, I'm not telling anyone what to do.

Both my kids had bottles from like day 3 on usually at least once a day. (this was actually "accidental", DD was dropping weight and we were struggling nursing and DS had jaundice and we needed to flush out his system). However, I never regretted it as I was NOT going to have the kid that wouldn't let me be away from them, it would make me crazy.  We just used the slowest flow nipple and had DH give the bottles to get some bonding time.  As a FTM though, I had read everything that said wait two weeks and I did drag my feet with DD until our pedi told it to me straight.

DS has been tougher than DD but he didn't like the bottles (playtex ventaire) that DD did. He started out really good but For awhile he started to completely reject them and would take for.ever. to finish them, but loved his paci. I went out and found the same brand bottle and thankfully the nipples were shaped similarly and he's done great with them.

So far ::knocks on wood:: both mine switched back and forth without trouble--well once we solved their bottle aversions! DD hated Dr. Brown's.  I nursed her until 1 year and DS is still going strong.  We just did one bottle/day with DD and attempted one bottle most days with DS.  I was lazier on forcing the bottle with DS though, but he is good now.

  •  We started at 5 days with DS and he did great.  It wasn't until after I stopped giving bottles around 5 months that he started refusing them.
  • DS was introduced to a bottle on Day 2 at the hospital. he had jaundice, and they didn't give me enough time to nurse between being under the lights (he fell asleep a lot, lazy latch), so we supplemented a tiny bit with formula. as soon as we got home, he got a bottle a day of expressed milk mostly because we got frustrated at each other when trying to latch. i probably would've held off longer if we got the latch down sooner.

cut to 3 months, and he started to reject the bottle and prefer me. we tried every day, nonetheless. he's been in daycare 3 full weeks now and is finally accustomed to the bottle again. minus the 1 month bottle strike, he switched easily between breast and bottle.

  • Sparky had a bottle first, in the NICU. We had latch problems once he got home, but only on one side. He has been switching back and forth like a champ though. Since day 1, he didn't care what he was sucking on as long as there is milk coming out. He's a smart boy ;)
