dishwasher or sterilizer for bottles?

So I was planning on just getting one of those dishwasher racks and putting the bottles/nipples/lids, etc in there to be cleaned.  However, I was talking to a friend last night and she said they hand-washed all their bottles after every feeding and then put them in the sterilizer, because the dishwasher and soap has diff chemicals in it.  What is everyone doing?  Thoughts/ideas on this?

Re: dishwasher or sterilizer for bottles?

  • If we had a dishwasher I would have registered for the racks and put everything in it but since we don't and DH doesn't have the most stellar record when it comes to washing dishes I did register for a sterlizer just to be safe. I have several friends who used solely the dishwasher racks and never had any trouble/worry

  • I just used the dishwasher. You can buy more natural detergents for it. Also, just make sure you don't use a rinse agent like jet dry because it leaves a chemical residue.

    This.

In the very begining we hand washed the bottles becuase of how frequent feedings are.  Once the feedings became less we washed the bottles in the dishwasher.

  • I would sterlize in the beginning and then switch to dishwasher, I think we switched around 6 months when DS was eating more solids and less bottles.

  • There is no reason to buy a sterilizer you can just bring a pot of water to a boil and throw in the bottles for a few minutes. I always hand washed and sterilized once a week since you need to sterilize pacifiers and teething toys too.

This!  I absolutely agree, there is no need to buy a sterilizer.  We did the same thing, hand-wash everything, then sterilize in a pot of boiling water once a week.  Later on when bottle feedings became less frequent and we became a little less fearful of germs, we started using the dishwasher.

  • I plan to boil the bottles and use the dishwasher rack for the related parts. I also figure if I throw bottles in there every once in a while, it's NBD. I mainly just like the added security of seeing for myself that the bottles are being sanitized and knowing we didn't accidentally tap the "low heat" button for a cycle with bottles in it.

  • We got a sterilizer and plan on hand washing and then using it.  It makes me feel more comfortable.  Plus we already go through so many glasses every day, there is never room int he dishwasher for more things.  It insane!  You think grown adults could use one glass a day...the concept just doesn't work in our house lol

I disagree. We tried this method on the stove for over a month and it was such a pain, and made the kitchen hot and steamy (it was summer, too). We got a microwave sterilizer, which is awesome and inexpensive. We also used the dishwasher.

Once DD switched to sippy cups, we only used the dishwasher.

Not any more than making a pot of spaghetti would.
