Re: Experience with Reglan for increasing supply?

  • It has been a miracle for me . . .while I'm taking it. I went from pumping 20oz/day  (over 3 sessions) to about 8-10. On the reglan I went back to 20oz. I believe the standard Rx is a escalating dose then taper off, I think to try to trick your body into continuing to make more, but I found that once I tapered off, my supply went back down to <10 oz. After talking to my doctor but against her "official" recommendations I stayed on it longer and as long as I take it, my supply is great. However, this is not recommended because of some very serious side effects that we are monitoring very closely for. I would talk to your doctor and if they are comfortable prescribing the standard taper then go for it, and perhaps your body will "fall" for it more than mine did. Good luck!

  • Also just realized that your baby is only 1 week old. Agree that there are LOTS of other things you can do this early in the game. My supply dropped at 9 months and that's when I tried the Reglan. Definitely get in contact with an LC!

  • I'm on my second round of Reglan right now. I took it for 2 weeks, and my supply almost doubled- it was fantastic. I finally had some release from the anxiety I was feeling about being able to feed my baby. Formula does a number on her stomach and reflux and I had serious guilt having to supplement (we tried 3 kinds, and weren't able to find one that agreed with her). I've had no problems with side effects-- if anything I feel more confident in my ability to feed my kid therefore less depressed/frantic.

However after the 2 weeks were up, I went off it and my supply tanked. Back to where I started. I called my dr, talked him into prescribing it again and am in the middle of the second 2 week regimen. My supply is back up to where it was in the first course. I know my dr won't prescribe it again, so I ordered Domperidone from inhousepharmacy for when my supply drops when I go off the Reglan (assuming it will).

I would also say that as a mom of a 1 week old, you probably don't have supply issues yet- your body is probably just making enough for her. I know it doesn't look like much, but their stomachs are about the size of a thimble right now. So even if you are getting under an oz while pumping, thats probably all she eats at a time, so you are still good. Give yourself a few weeks to see if your supply keeps up with her appetite. Nurse if you can- pumping can decrease your supply. Make sure you a drinking enough water, and eating enough calories (that was hard for me the first few weeks). Try natural supplements before you try an rx- like Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle (for me I noticed a major difference when I started taking Blessed Thistle). GL!

  • I couldn't handle the side effects longer than 5 days but I saw a little increase in my supply. The Reglan made me want to jump off a bridge. I thought I had PPD until I stopped taking it. I recently ordered Domperidone online since it's suppose to have less side effects. Still waiting on it to arrive so I'm not sure if it works yet.

  • I was a jittery anxious mess on Reglan, I had to quit almost immediately.
