Are Ultrasound weight estimates usually correct?

My doctor told me today my LO is 9 pounds 6 oz and I'm being induced Sunday night, any opinions on whether the weight is pretty accurate or not?

  • No.  They can be off 20% or 1-2#.

  • As PPs said, they can be off by as much as 1-2lbs.  My friend had a u/s a few days before she had her son and was told that he was "definately over 9 pounds".  He was 7lb 5oz at birth.

I had a u/s on Friday and my LO is estimated at 8lb 15oz.  My dr isn't inducing because if she's not ready to be born there's a higher risk of a c/s.  Dr said that in most cases if you let a larger baby come when it's ready it can be delivered vaginally without interventions.

  • As pp mentioned, no they are not always accurate.  At my last u/s the tech measured the baby at 7lb 9oz. He was born Monday at 7lb 4oz.  Pretty damn good estimate Big Smile

  • My last ultrasound 2 days before LO was born said she would be around 8 pounds.  She was 6lbs 15 ounces so I would say it was pretty off.  It is just and estimated fetal weight.

  • Mine was pretty close, but I know they normally aren't.  Our 36w growth scan estimated DD at 5lbs 12oz, so they guessed she'd be about 7lbs at birth.  She was born at 39w2d, weighing 6lbs 11oz.

  • The ultrasound I had the day before I had LO said 6 lbs 11 oz.  LO weighed 5 lbs 9 oz at birth.

  • The growth ultrasounds I had for all 3 of my kids were very accurate, but I've heard of lots that are off too. I had mine done at a high risk specialist, so they were very thorough.

  • nope, i don't even know why they will tell us their weight 'guesses' b/c of how inaccurate they are.  At my 38 week appt they said DS was 7lbs 4oz.  DS was born at 40w2d and was only 6lb15.  I was guessing he'd be over 8lbs considering he was a boy and also my 2nd baby.

  • I will also add- my boss told me her 9 year old daughter was guessed to be over 10 lbs by 35 weeks and so they induced her but the baby ended up being only 5lbs 5oz and had to spend over 3 weeks in the NICU b/c of this mistake....

  • In my case, it was off. My doctor estimated my daughter was a little under 7 lbs and she was 8 lbs 12 oz! It's just an estimate.

  • Yeah, its definitely a guesstimate. The day before I went into labor the OB said he would be about 7lbs, 15oz. I ended up pushing out an 8lb, 8.5oz baby!
