My 5 week old has red bumpy "rash" on the lower half of his face that spreads down his neck and chest and is now a little on his arms. The pedi said it was baby acne, but I am not so sure that is what it is. It is finer than baby acne.
He is also fighting some wicked gas. He squirms in pain and is cranky after he eats. He usually falls asleep nursing then wakes up crying. He is definitely a farting machine and strains a lot to pass gas and bm.
Is this just general baby gas and acne or something else? My mom instinct is telling me it is something else. Where should I start? Detergents, dairy free diet, creams for the rash?
Re: Baby acne and gassiness or dairy allergy?
My DD had horrible acne over her face and chest. It got really bad around 4 weeks and continued until about 7-8 weeks. She also had bad colic and gas for the same time frame, maybe starting a little earlier though. Her acne has completely cleared up and her colic has improved. We still get a fussy night once or twice a week.
If your peds thinks the rash looks like acne, I probably would wait it out another couple weeks. Usually by 8 weeks the digestive tract is more mature and the gas should improve. If not, then I would look at dairy as a possible cause.
How do the diapers look? Green? Extra-Mucousy? Any spots of blood?
It could be either... I think I'd look for signs of a dairy intolerance in the diapers.
