I would really like to switch from my OB to a CNM and do a home birth, for a number of reasons. I just called my insurance and they were incredibly unhelpful in navigating this. Have any of you succesfully had insurance cover a CNM/home birth? Any tips?
Thanks!
Re: XP- home birth w/ CNM insurance issue?
I would call again in hopes of getting someone more knowledgable. If that person is not helpful, escalate to their supervisor.
Also, maybe it would be helpful to focus on asking about homebirth or birth center coverage rather than asking specifically about CNMs? In my state, I don't think CNM can do homebirths since they have to be under the guidance of an OB. CPMs can do homebirths, though. So, bringing up the different qualifications of midwives would just confuse someone not in the know since it varies by state. You would think insurance people would know the nuances, but I have not found that to be the case.
Let us know how it goes!

My insurance covers CNMs but around here there are no CNMs that do home births. I am planning to birth our next LO at home (whenever that will be since we're not currently pregnant) but plan to pay out of pocket.
I agree about the calling back in hopes of getting someone else though.
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
Our old insurance covered a midwife but none under the plan so we had to go out of network which would have cost 5000 even though our midwife was 3500 Lol NOT!
So we switched insurances (for many reasons not just the midwife) and it was fully covered plus tub rental and placenta pills.
Maybe your insurance has a website? or try calling back, may have just gotten someone on a bad day
