Killer Heartburn & indigestion !!!! What to eat ?? what to do ???

I have had very bad indigestion/heartburn through out my whole pregnancy so far..... its made sleeping even more difficult :( I have tried Zantag and it seems to help a lil but i dont want to take Medicine everyday or twice a day, i feel like it will effect the baby, idk ??? I love spicy food !!! or just food with flavor ...duh but what should i eat ? it seems even crackers give me hb .............Help !

Re: Killer Heartburn & indigestion !!!! What to eat ?? what to do ???

  • Avoid spicy and greasy foods. I need to chew 1000s of times each bite and I am eating smaller portions more often.

Do not go without eating for too long.

  • I have the exact same problems. Last night at 2:30 am, I told my DH that I was going to try to go watch some TV so I could fall asleep...the second I hit that recliner, it helped SO much...something with just the right incline. Also, as my boobs weigh about 3,000 lbs right now, when I laid down like that, I lifted my arms over my head, and that oddly helped relieve some of the boob-induced weight from being pushed on my my stomach.

  • I was just talking to my chiropractor about this a few days ago and he had a few suggestions.  One is making sure to chew your food an thoroughly as possible so it's easier to digest.  Another is to not drink too much while you are eating.  I'm horrible about that--I will drink 2 glasses of water with a meal.  I've been trying really hard to only have about 1/2 a glass.  He said that when you drink too much with your food, your mouth isn't producing enough saliva which is what helps food digest.

  • I would like to know as well...

I sleep practically sitting up now and that helps somewhat.

This.  I lived on this stuff when I was pregnant with DS.  Literally - I took it every night before bed. If not, I'd wake up with acid crawling up my throat within 30 minutes.  Strangely, I also found that watermelon helped if I had heartburn during the day.

I take this, which I got as a perscrip from my OB. I HAVE TO take 1 before I go to bed or I will be in hell all night long. It seems to help. I try to stay away from eating so many hours before bed, too, which helps a lot.

During the day, everything KILLS me, whether I'm sitting, standing and laying down. It's a no-win for me. I figure Tums would help BUT I can't stand the chaulky taste of them. It kinda makes me gag thinking about it .. lol

Good luck honey. This mess is nooooooo fun at all!

Watermelon, really? I love watermelon. Strange, but hey, when you're pregnant, NOTHING is really strange. lol

  • I've found that gum helps me a bit, also for whoever didn't like the chalky taste/texture of tums, have you tried the Smoothies ones?  THey are better IMO texturally and taste-wise.

Yup!  It worked for me when I was pregnant with DS, but it also worked for my mom who has terrible heartburn on a regular basis.  It doesn't last all that long, but it's a great temporary fix.  :)

  • Ughh, I have acid reflux all the time..even when I'm not pregnant, but when I'm pregnant I can't take my normal meds!  My OB gave me a prescription for it, so you may want to ask your about it. Otherwise, Prilosec seemed to work better than Zantac for me.  I also read on another board yesterday someone said eating a banana after meals helped them.  I haven't tried that, but thought I'd throw it out there!

  • I am in your boat! I think my symptoms went away today. I had yogurt last night, which seemed to stop the acid from coming up. I read that you should eat lots of fruits and vegetables, especially spinach and sweet potatoes. I'm going to stock up on that, yogurt and tums in preparation for my next bout. This round lasted 4 days- no fun.

I agree with probably sleeping with your head high will help. I did it last night for the first time, and coupled with the yogurt, I'm better today! Good luck!
