Can you use an area rug on carpet? (nursery related)

Trying to decorate LO #2's nursery.  I would LOVE to have a funky rug in the room, but the room has carpet.  Is this a faux paus?  I always thought you were only supposed to use an area rug on hardwood (or laminate, etc) flooring, but not on carpet.  But, while looking through nursery websites, I have seen some rugs used on carpet.  What is the concensus?

Edit: I will say that IF I were to ever do it, I would get a thinner rug (not a big, thick wool one or anything like that).

  • I see it all the time.  I however am not a fan.  But I don't see why not.

  • DS has carpet in his room with an area rug
  • We have that set up. We have a ivory carpet and then put a circular green and ivory area run on top. It's cute looking, but it's annoying. I trip over it and it's from PBK and it's wooly so if you're wearing black or dark colors the threads kind of grab on to you. I think as long as you have a very neurtral carpet under neath it is fine.
  • We had one in DD's room (rag rug) and it was great since her carpet is a nasty grey/white berber so it added some color to the room.  Unfortunatly it didnt survive a trip thru the washing machine because someone Embarrassed forgot to switch the machine to delicate before washing, so now we are sans rug.

  • My living room has a very dull boring brown/tan carpet and I have a huge plain black area rug over it. I see no faux pas with it and it looks rather nice.

I don't see anything wrong with rugs on carpet.

  • My son's room is a nautical theme with light blue, navy blue, and reds. We have beige carpet and I have a red shag area rug in the middle of his room. I love the splash of color it adds!

  • Absolutely you can do this! I was meeting with an interior decorator a few weeks ago and we actually talked specifically about this. It is for decoration/add color/a different texture, etc. and can really add to the feel of the room.

My favorite part of DD's nursery is the area rug that I put over the carpet/in front of her rug. Oh the horror! :)

Big Smile Glad to know an interior decorator OK'd it.  I definitely want a small rug in the nursery, so I'm gonna go for it!  Hey, it's not permanent, right?
