How to BF and introduce solids?

I would like to try some baby food with DD when she is four or five months old. Do you nurse, then give some baby food after each nursing session during the day? Or do you do only one feeding of baby food during the day and nurse the rest of the time? How did you keep breastfeeding and introduce solids?

Re: How to BF and introduce solids?

  • When we first started on solids, we did one meal a day (lunch) and nursed the rest of the day.  Your LO will need a bit of time to get used to the new texture and taste.  What worked for DS was to try the puree (we started with rice cereal and quickly switched to sweet potato) and then nurse him.  I didn't replace his lunch nursing session with food, but rather added on to it.

  • We introduced dinner first (rice cereal to begin with) at 6 months.  I would make sure to nurse about an hour before, so he wouldn't replace the feeding with food.  Milk should still be the primary source of nutrition until a year.

  • I like the "under one just for fun" take on solids. DD still has the same number of nursing sessions, but one is added on to with a rice cereal or puree.

  • We do baby-led solids, so we skipped purees and cereal completely and just started finger foods at 6 months. It's been really great, and I would never do "traditional" baby food with another child.
