I am so upset, hurt and angry right now. I rarely vent here, but I have to get this off my chest.
My DH has worked as a carpenter for 8 years now. He studied construction technology at our local community college and got a job right after he finished school. He has worked at the same job for 8 years. The person he works with is a licensed residential contractor. DH and he graduated from high school together. The two of them plus DH's brother work together to build local houses with values up to 350,000. They get a lot of local business and when other contractors are without work you can always bet that they have something to do.
DH loves the work he does. However, he does this job with NO benefits. No sick leave, no vacation time, no insurance, not even a company truck. Even though he has worked with this individual for 8 years none of these things have been offered.
When I went into labor DH took off the three days we were in the hospital. When he got his paycheck we were surprised to see that he got paid for those days despite the fact that he didn't work. He sincerely thanked his boss for this generous act.
Today DH told me that his boss told him that he couldn't really afford to pay him for the hours that he didn't work while baby and I were in the hospital and that his paycheck tomorrow would only be for 60 hours instead of 80. (Two week pay period)
I am taking 4 weeks off work with no pay and we were financially prepared for me to do so. We were also prepared for DH to have to take some time off work with no pay. It just sucks to think that someone was going to finally show you some appreciation/gratitude and then take it right back.
Maybe I need to be brought back down to earth, but this really bothers me. We have looked for other jobs for DH but the construction business is generally slow these days.
Re: Financial vent
How frustrating that they are going to deduct that money. Can your hubs talk to his boss? I mean that seems really messed up.
Yeah, I would check on that...Sorry that it's happening!
My thoughts exactly. Unfortunately what's legal isn't always right.
This! I know the guy is a friend of YH and he's been working with him for 8 years, but I'm not sure it's legal for him to withhold that money, although he might argue that the extra money he got when you were in the hospital was an oversight. I don't know all the legalities around that, but it's worth looking into.
Although, you're in a tough spot, because if jobs are tough to come by, I'm sure YH doesn't want to rock the boat with his boss....
Not sure if it is legal, but it does suck. The one thing that I find peace with is that karma is real and it will come back to him in some form or fashion.
