2nd time moms...here's what I HATE hearing...

Question: Is Joe excited to be a big brother?

Me: Yes, he is super excited!

Response: Oh, he'll be excited at first but after a week he'll be begging to have her go back to wherever she came from!

Uhhh, gee thanks. Why does everyone with 2+ kids seem to set me up for the same dreary news about how my son will hate my daughter by, first, asking me if he is excited?!?! Second, in my best Stephanie Tanner voice "HOW RUDE!!!"

  • ::waving hello::

    It's frustrating.  We all have to remember these things 3 years from now when we are talking to some soon to be first time mom and almost say the same thing!

    I catch myself all the time now about to say that thing that drove me crazy when I was pregnant or as a first time mom or whatever.  My filter is getting stronger and stronger every day!

  • I hate those questions, too.  DD is 2 and I am fully aware that she has NO idea what it will truly mean to have a little brother.  No, she is not "ready," and while she may occasionally act excited, it is mostly because she looks forward to stealing his toys.  :)

  • I've heard all that stuff too, even though it's the fourth child in our family it will be our first experience with two little ones (DH and I had one boy each when we met, they are 13 and 11 now).  I just tell people that our daughter will be just fine, she loves babies, and try to ignore the implications that she will feel otherwise.  Only time will tell afterall, not some stranger trying to predict my family dynamic after a two minute conversation in the Y locker room.

    Mostly I'm just thankful that when people say "Is this your first?" I can answer with "nope, it's our fourth" because most of their advice goes out the window when they realize I have some experience with childbirth and mothering.  Generally the conversation goes on from there to be about my other kids, then they find out I have a teenager, look shocked, tell me I still look like a teenager, I say thank you, then I walk away feeling much better about my 31 year old self.

  • I hate when they ask if my 2 year old (read 25 month old) is excited. No she doesn't understand!!!

    Love the Steph Tanner ref too!

  • People always ask if our son is excited...he's barely two years old! He has no idea!! He loves babies but it's not like he "gets" that one will be living here full time!

  • That isn't true, anyway.  DD1 was 2 when DD2 was born, and she has always adored her.  They are best friends, and my oldest is 5.  :)

  • I'm a FTM but I do agree its very rude, I don't know why people say that
  • I'm a FTM so I haven't had that, but I also can't stand when people ask if I'M  excited. No... I couldn't care less. Really?

  • I always beat them to the punch by saying "yea sure he is excited, but he really has no idea what is about to happen." Then they awkwardly smile and change the subject.  I love doing that to people!  Like when they ask if I am excited (such an annoying question) I like to say "well I am going to have 2 now so, no I am actually a little terrified."  Again... awkward smile  :)   I just think hey, you asked!

  • lol yeaaaaah....I had this exact conversation 5 times this week....

    It's the same people that used to tell me the first time around that my life will be over when I have a baby and to get my sleep now b/c I'll never sleep again.
