FTM ? - Do you have to use a mattress pad?

Probably a stupid question, buuuuuut, do you have to use a mattress pad?

DS is still in the PnP bassinet for right now but will be outgrowing it soon so we're starting crib preps. We had registered for a mattress pad, but when it came it didn't fit well and made me feel like it was too cushy as an added layer to the bed so we returned it. I haven't bought anything else since. So, question is, since the mattress itself is waterproof, do you have to use a waterproof mattress pad?

  • Our mattress is waterproof and we don't have anything but a sheet on it.

  • Our mattress is waterproof, but I know my best friend's crib mattress is not.  She actually told me a story the other day about her son wetting clear through his diaper clothes and sheet, soaking the mattress.  They had to wash it and take it out and dry it out - huge process.  If you have one that is waterproof (we have the sealy soybean foam core mattress) I would say no you don't need it, but otherwise, definitely worth the purchase.  BRU has a 2 pack of BRU brand ones that fit well.

  • We do, mostly because it's easier to just take it off and throw it in the wash then it would be to wipe down the mattress. My OCD would take over and I'd end up spending way too long scrubbing it ;)

Plus I think our mattress has threads across it, sort of like a quilted look, and they looked like plain thread that would just soak anything up.

  • Our mattress is waterproof and we only have a sheet on it. You can also buy those all purpose waterproof pads to lay on top of the sheet for spit-up and diaper accidents. We have a few of those.

  • Have you had a blowout yet? Lol. It'd much easier to throw the pad in the washi stead of having to change the whole sheets, also the poop stains the plastic

  • Both DS's and DD's crib mattress are waterproof but we still use pads-- I bought something similar to these: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3368922

They are really flat, no padding at all so it doesnt make the mattress any softer-- I generally keep about 3 crib sheets on the crib at a time w/ one of these in between each layer that way if there is a mess in the middle of the night you can just pull of the dirty sheet and wet crib mattress liner and there is a fresh sheet ready to go. This is definitely helpful when you have a sick kiddo that may be needing a sheet change more than once at night. Even with 3 sheets and 3 pads on the crib doesnt look any thicker than it would with just 1 sheet on.
