Moms that had GD with previous pregnancies

Did they do the GD test sooner with the second pregnancy?  I didn't have it with #1 and I am hoping to not have it this go around as well.  It could be nothing, and I hope it is, but I'm so thirsty ALL.THE.TIME.  I am hoping that doesn't mean anything in terms of GD.

Re: Moms that had GD with previous pregnancies

  • I had it with DS and was presumed to have it with DD (failed the 1 hour, refused the 3).  My doctor won't be testing me any earlier.

  • There is a new recommendation that it's checked in the 1st tri for everyone, regardless of history.  My Dr. will probably check it early - at least that was what she said during my last pregnancy.  I had it with DD and if I fail the 1 hour, I will just assume I have it and not endure the 3 hour test again.

  • I think it's interesting that two of you mentioned that you refused the 3 hour test after failing the first.  Was is just really that bad?  Or is it the combination of having GD the first time plus the failed one hour test enough knowledge to just change your diet and assume you have GD again?  I didn't exactly enjoy the experience of doing the one hour test last time but it wasn't as awful as some people on TB made it seem (each person is different, I know).  How much worse IS the 3 hr test compared to the first one?  Certainly hoping to avoid it though.

  • I had a horrible experience with the 3 hour.  First you are fasting, then drinking a solution even more concentrated than the 1 hour stuff - I didn't think the 1 hour was bad at all, then you get 4 sticks, and I couldn't even sip on water.  By the time it was over I was so sick.  With my history and risk factors, I would just assume I had it vs. having the test.

  • My doc said he'd test me at 14 wks.  I haven't started the GDD yet but I have been careful what I eat.  He said there is a 90% chance that you will get it in subsequent pregnancies- not to scare you, but just be prepared. I have had pretty good A1C's since my pregnancy in 2008 but I have been randomly checking my numbers and they range pretty good- some are high.

Have you checked the GD board?

Did you have A1C's drawn after your first pregnancy?

As far as thirst, I was the most thirsty in my first pregnancy and I didn't have GD, so I think it depends ;-).

  • I had it with my first.  I think (if I remember correctly?) that they tested me at 20 weeks vs. the usual 28 weeks with my second.  I didn't have it with my 2nd or 3rd!  Hoping and praying I don't have it this time around either.

I thought the diet was brutal for a pregnant woman!!!

Or I just like to eat...............
