Team Pink Turned Team Blue! 1/18/12 long ftm birth story

I was scheduled for an induction on the 18th at 8 am.  my husband and i were so excited we didnt get much sleep the night before (mistake!)  The doctor had told us at 19 weeks we were having a girl so i began buying girl stuff and at my shower it was all for a girl.  luckily the gear and furniture i bought are nuetral!

So finally at 9 am the doctor arrived and checked me, i was 3-4 cm and fully effaced.  So he popped my water and i think it actually felt nice, a little bit of relief that it was actually happening maybe.  about 3 hours later i started having timable contractions but nothing that hurt.  Not until 2pm did i have to start breathing through them.  I had always wanted to try to do a natural birth but i had no idea of my pain level so i was ready for any birth.  By 3 pm i was 8 cm and really having a hard time with contractions.  I asked for an iv drug to just take the edge off. I got Stadol (spelling?) and it only helped for one contraction (boo).  however at that point i was in so much pain i was really questioning whether i could do this.  my husband was great reasurring me that whatever i chose was fine.  sadly for him i didnt want to be touched so he had a very boring time while i labored!

all of a sudden the pain was really bad.  i called the nurse and told her to prep the epidural at 4 pm. she said it seemed like i might be ready to push then so she checked me and sure enough i was all set!  so it was too late for the epi (which im grateful it was now) the nurse said as soon as i felt the need to push to go ahead.  by that time there was another nurse in the room prepping for labor.  the doctor was called and i even did 3 pushes without the doctor.  pushing was not what i expected. it was so hard to pinpoint where to push because it felt really wrong pushing that hard on my butt!  the nurse told me to stop because baby was almost there, and perfect timing because the doctor walked in!  i did 3 more pushes with my husband counting through them for me and helping me hold my ankles.  the pain felt when baby was crowning is intense.  ive never been in so much pain. the doctor was helping the babies head out with his fingers and i felt every bit.  i actually told him "please dont touch me there" lol.  when the head came out i ended up tearing 3 times all 2nd degree.  once up by my labia the other toward my bum and a smaller one on the side.  my husband said he actually saw guts n stuff come out of my bottom tear....(didnt really want to know that!)

everyone says you feel relief when the head is out....i didnt feel relief until the shoulders were out. i was so out of it that when they placed him on my chest i looked at it and remember thinking "huh". i was also shaking a ton because of shock or tired muscles im not sure (nurse said it was normal).  my husband saw that i was out of it so he placed my hands on the baby and said "honey look its our baby boy" and started rubbing my hands over him.  that kinda woke me up and i saw a gorgeous baby boy sitting on chest.  then it hit me....BOY.  wait...were having a girl!!  i looked at my husband and was like wtf....lol  the doctor goes well mistakes happen.  my husband and i didnt care what we had but we were just prepared for a girl so it was quite the shock.

while i was staring at my beautiful boy the doctor was pulling out the placenta.  i though that felt really nice too lol it was very warm and comforting to my sore parts.  once that was out my doctor because sewing me up....ya thats no fun.  he gave me a shot down there to numb but didnt wait for it to kick in so i felt everything.  it took about 5 mins to sew me up.  by that time they had baby all set and cleared in the table next to me with husband watching over.  he called my mom who had to be hung up on because she wouldnt stop saying "i dont believe it" when he said it was a boy.

i stayed in the hospital for a day and a half after birth prolly 2 days total. the hospital was so great.  they gave us a boy outfit to take him home in! we are going to donate some of our girl clothes to say thanks!

im def. in rough shape.  i looked in a mirror yesterday and literally said omg please heal.  it was quite the scary scene.  there are def. a ton of hardships after having a baby including (pooping, walking, getting up, breastfeeding, sleep, and sooo much more.) i ended up crying because i was so tired and sick of hurting.  mostly this happens at night.  but then i just remember that i accomplished growing a life and bringing into this world so i take it one day at a time.

sorry but i dont have time to post a pic but james is 9 lbs 2 oz and 20.75 " long.  he had his first check up and is healthy :)

  • Congrats on your baby BOY!  And congrats on making it through without the epidural!

I'm team pink (for now, haha) and keep wondering what we're going to do with all these girls clothes if she came out a he...  He'd not only be naked, but nameless because DH and I could never agree on a boy's name.

    Good luck on your recovery!

Totally unrealted..wht kind of dog is Ada?  We have a similar looking shelter rescue...her head shapes is a bit different but markings are very similar...she is clearly a mix of something, but we have never been able to figure out what.  The shelter called her a basset hound (she was a puppy in their defense) but she's clearly no hound.

All of this! I am hoping for a natural birth also!! And the same with the team pink turned blue. We are completely set on a girls name, but never decided on a boy's name because MH is stubborn and so am I lol. We do have some gender neutral clothes, although not many! Lol

Ada is a purebred Greater Swiss Mountain Dog.  They're considered a large/extra large breed, but she's a runt at 80 lbs.  They're one of those breeds where they all look almost identical.  The kennel always tells me it's so difficult when they have 3 or 4 of them running around trying to tell them apart.  They look like a rotteweiler in a tuxedo Wink

They're cousins to the Bernese Mountain dog (which just have long fur), Appenzeller, and Entlebucher (which are a bit lower to the ground). The Berners and Swissies are definitely much more common in the US though.

  • I can't believe they didn't wait for you to numb up before stitching you! Yikes! I'm sure having a little boy was a huge surprise after you planned for a girl, but I'm happy to hear you have a healthy little boy. Congratulations, mommy!

Fabulous- we had done our own guessing and thought perhaps she was part swissie (I know they are rarely mixed with other breeds but given she was found by animal control at like 4 weeks old, I'm not sure someones purebred daddy didn't get out and have himself an evening on the town).  Ours is 80 lbs, and if I had to guess on her mix I'd say shepard/swissie.  My vet doesn't even hazard a guess. but her markings are all swissie and she has the strength of a horse at least.  Further confirming my suspicions!

  • Congrats on the boy! I totally agree about the not knowing how/where to push. It was totally a weird sensation. I also tore funny (up, down, sideways), thought it was a relief to pass the placenta, and thought it was uncomfortable to have the doctor stretch it out down there.  I did get the epi, so I can't imagine your discomfort. Congrats again on your baby boy!

Congrats!!! I can't believe you ended up having a boy! They didn't do any other ultrasounds after 19 weeks? I feel that as long as he's healthy it really doesnt matter. I also had a second degree tear, down and to one side. I was not expecting the level of swelling that I had even though it makes sense considering the trauma that area goes through. But by day 4 I felt a lot better down there but it was painful and uncomfortable for a while. Congrats again!
