Monitoring Appointments poll

Do you go to your monitoring appointments by yourself or with your significant other?

I was surprised to be the only one there by myself this morning. H has only gone with me on the weekend ones...but even then, he drops me off and then runs errands.

It was too early in the morning for anything other than monitoring appointments. Other services don't begin until 8:30.

Re: Monitoring Appointments poll

  • Our schedule is pretty wide open in the mornings so my husband has gone with me to every appointment. But I do see a lot of women alone at our clinic.

  • By myself always. DH and I work very different schedules, so he rarely goes to any kind of doctor appts with me. It doesn't bother me, but sometimes I get weirded out by all the couples in the RE waiting room. However, a lot of them could be there for a consult, in which DH and I did go together because the RE had tests for the both of us to do.

  • My husband always comes with me, for 2 reasons.  One, we work for the same company, so we ride to work together, which means he has to go with me.  Two, he feels pretty uninvolved in this whole process, so coming to the appointments lets him feel like he's more integral.

  • DH didn't go with me at first, even to the consult which looking back was odd, why didn't I ask him to go? He still doesn't come with me to baseline appts, but he expressed interest in coming to the mid-cycle monitoring so he was there for that last cycle and he'll be there for it this cycle.

We also work together and ride together. Our bosses both know what's going on and let us have a lot of flexibility, and the RE's office is literally less than 5 minutes from our office. I would be fine if he wasn't there, but if he wants to be involved, I'll gladly let him.

  • I go by myself if they're during the week, but if it's on a weekend DH comes to keep me company.

We both have busy work schedules so it's not possible for him to be at all of the monitoring appointments (and I think it would be kind of silly to drag him to all of these anyway). Last time I had an IUI he couldn't come due to a big meeting at work and it was totally fine with me - the procedure took less than 10 minutes and I was in and out. I think I'd feel really differently about an IVF though.

  • The day I got my PCOS "diagnosis" from the stupid u/s technician, DH wasn't with me because of course, we expected to get the results from the doctor. It was really hard to be alone at that moment. From that point on, we decided to do as many of these appointments together as possible. I appreciate it because I feel like so much of this is a learning experience, and even though I always take a notepad with me, sometimes I need help remembering what the doctors and nurses say, especially when multiple options are presented. I think here in Kenya, it's a little counter-cultural to have a man come to fertility appointments. The first time we met with our RE, DH walked into her office first and by the time I'd entered the room, the RE was trying to disguise the surprise on her face :)

My RE clinic is about 45 min away, so we try to schedule early morning visits and then come back and he goes to school the rest of the day(He is working on his thesis, final semester of Grad School). But on those days he generally tries to work later in the day so that he doesnt miss too much work.

  • I go alone. He has offered to go with me, but he would wait in the consult room anyways. I don't see any reason to take him with me when there isnt much that is going to be said. He gets too uncomfortable seeing me in stirrups and until there's a baby to see on that screen it doesn't make sense to put him in to an uncomfortable situation. I don't need anyone to hold my hand and I can relay information just find. He went to the consult but stayed in the consult room while I had my u/s done. I didn't take him to my HSG, and while I did have my mom drive me I didn't have her I the room with me. I guess I would just rather do those things alone until it's specifically baby related , rather than fertility related.
