A friend of mine just gave me similar ready to feed formula. My plan is to use the powder but I thought this might be amazing for middle of the night feedings. I wouldn't have to make a bottle at 3am. IT would be ready. I haven't spoken to the pediatrician yet (doing that next week) but I was wondering if this would be ok..switching back and forth from pre made to powder OR does that tend to cause GI problems for the LOs.
TIA!!
Re: Ready to feed formula...
We used pretty much RTF formula for dd the majority of the time she was on it.
Its pretty easy. You have to use the bottle within 48 hours (I think). I used to make up the bottles (we used the enfamil can - so we couldn't leave it in there). We had to put the bottles in the fridge. My dd hated cold milk so we had to warm each bottle. That could be a PIA, if you lo will take a room temp bottle (which my dd didn't like either) which is great about the powder.
If you do the RTF and go out the bottle needs to be kept cool. So you need the pouches with the freezer packs. And then if your lo won't eat cold milk you have to warm it up. Again if you baby doesn't care either way then you can bring the powder with you when you go out.
Some babies prefer one over the other, powder verses RTF. There is something different about them. Some babies can switch back and forth without a problem (like my dd, she really didn't care much).
**Of course when I talk about RTF and powder, I mean of the same type of formula, Similac Advance for example)
But for the most part you can switch and it should not effect their digestion.
Hope this helps.
We used both Similac RTF and powder for my son. He never had any problems switching. I will echo what the pp said though. 1) It has to be used with in a certain time frame, so it's not like you'll be able to keep it in there just for night feedings for more than 2 nights. 2) Again as pp pointed out, the RTF actually takes more time in the middle of the night because it's refridgerated and you'll probably have to warm it up (unless you get a baby that doesn't mind cold bottles!) So really, the powder is quicker and easier for these times. The RTF was nice for daycare because I could just give them a few to keep on hand so I never had to worry about him not having enough. Some DCPs may have different policies on this, though.
There was something else I was going to mention....but I forgot....
We have the Similac Advanced RTF forumla (just pop on the nipple and go!) in the 2 oz size bottles (which will be what baby starts out with, and we'll adjust accordingly if need-be), so we most-likely won't need to run "leftovers" to the fridge in the middle of the night or keeping them cool/having to warm them back up. My LO drank them at room temp last time, so it was great! Best part is hubby can help out so you can get some shut-eye, too
**Your LO should be fine as long as it has the same base (same brand helps)... it's trial and error, you will figure out what does or doesn't upset LO's belly..
Oh self righteous one...not that it is any of your business but have you thought that perhaps I may have wanted to breast feed and can't for medical and personal reasons. Or perhaps I just don't want to. Either way get off your high horse and keep your personal preferences to yourself.
Oh yes, the little 2 oz bottles are awesome for those first few weeks! We got a bunch from the hospital and I kept them right on my bedstand! They also make 8 oz RTF bottles, that you can just screw a nipple on, which are great for later. I assumed the OP was talking about the 32 oz big bottles. The main difference between RTF and powder is the price. Comparatively, powder is way cheaper, and easy to stock up on free samples from my experience!
And, sadly, my breasts were not full of RTF milk...just a little bit, so we needed the formula so my child wouldn't starve.
What happens if breastfeeding doesn't work out? It's not as simple as, here baby, here's my boob. She's feeding her child. I don't get why people care how someone else feeds their baby.
OP, I agree with others. The ready to use is great, but you have to keep it cold and have to use it within a certain amount of time. I found it easier to make a bottle with the powdered formula in the middle of the night versus having to warm up a bottle. That being said, we switched back and forth with DD a few times, and it didn't upset her tummy. I think as long as it's the same type of formula, you're good to go.
Well, mine did. Hopefully yours does too! Our pedi also gave us a couple cans of powder at every visit, too!
Seriously... She was not asking about BFing. That was a totally unnecessary, b*tch comment. A lot of people can't BF who wish they could and are not doing their children any harm by FF.
Babies being fed is the important part, not how they get it. All you are doing is fear mongering.
The percentage of women who truly can not breastfeed because of valid medical reasons is less than 2%.

Don't worry about her. She's just a troll.
No, I'm not a troll. I'm sharing valid information regarding someone's public post on a public website.
I will be BFing for 6 weeks. Then I have to go back to work.
My company has 4 people. NO laws apply to my rights to pump. There is NOWHERE in the office other than the toilet for pumping. I have to WORK 8 hours a day. Sure I can take all the time I want to sit in the bathroom and pump, but I would be at work 12 hours a day to get in my 8 work hours. So yea I could do it, but sitting on a toilet, and being away from my child for 13+ hours a day (adding in my commute)...
I will TRULY not be able to BF longer than a few weeks and will need to use formula. It may not be medical, but I think providing for my family and having health insurance makes my job more important than BFing.
Get off your high horse. You don't know it all just b/c you know how to Google.
Yes you are. A simple Google search turns up hateful posts from you and complaints from multiple boards since at least the middle of last year.
You should really search out something else to be all crazy committed to besides drama stirring on a public message board.
Back to the topic at hand...depending on what happens with my supply when I go back to work, we will supplement with formula. My mom (who works in healthcare) is a big fan of the Similac Advanced RTF and already sent me a bunch of it to have on hand. She claims it should be no different than the powder.
People don't like me because they can't handle the truth about the things they choose to do. Too bad so sad. If you are going to be a slacker mom and feed your child processed garbage right from the get go, at least be honest with yourself about it.
Seriously, ladies. Ignore this woman. She always has some nasty thing to say. Whether she is a troll or not, ignore her. Don't justify yourself to anyone. Let her BF her offspring and we can all hope and pray they don't turn out like her.
I wasn't familiar with the this particular witch until today
She is now added to my list of those to ignore completely on here.
Adventure's In Willyland
A-men OP. I am huge proponent of breastfeeding, but it's YOUR LO and YOUR choice. Nobody has the right to preach to you about they think what is best for YOUR child.
You are a troll, but beyond that you are also irritating and self-righteous and need more to worry about than what this poor woman is going to feed her child.
I had no idea you could Google posting history! That's useful information...

Clomid Cycle #1: 50mg = BFP

TTC#2: BFP Cycle #1, no fertility meds!
So in other words...it's above 0%...meaning that it DOES, in fact, happen to people.
I was one of those people. If you are honestly suggesting that feeding my kid NOTHING was better than formula, than there is something screwy in your head.
To the OP: I just wanted to give you the heads up that my daughter did not like taking the ready-to-use formula once I started giving powder - I think because it's a bit of a different texture/thickness. You will probably have no problems, but I just wanted to advise you of that.

When we supplemented DD1 we switched back and forth with the RMF and powdered, depending on what was handy. Like the PP, just make sure you're using the same brand.

So basically 2% of about 3.5 billion women. Yeah, you're right, that's such a small amount of women who can't BF :::eye roll:::.
It's people like you, with your "I'm better than you" attitude that make me sick. It's not because I care how you feed your child, it's the fact that you think that your way is the ONLY way. That your choices are better than everyone elses choices. That you are perfect and without fault. I can see from your siggie, aruiz1982, that you aren't GOD, so please step down from your pedestal.
BTW, what do you eat? Do you never consume anything other than raw veggies/fruit and meat? Because when you BF, everything you eat/drink, your baby eats/drinks. So unless you live some lifestyle where nothing but fresh fruit/veggies and meat enter your body, your baby will at some point consume artificial ingredients. I guess you also only drink water as well. More power to your holier than thou lifestyle and attutude.
I thought she truly believed she had "the best" ideas and "the right answer" (based on her own perception of herself) at first, but the more i saw her comments on boards the more i just realized she is just an unhappy person... People have bad days and biiitchy moments, but i've never seen a day or post on here from her that was happy or positive.
That's really sad... So i just decided to ignore her, hope she finds some inner-peace, and that once her baby arrives (bless it's heart), that she will have less "free time" on her hands to go around attempting to make people feel miserable like her.
Poor thing...
Yeah, massive troll...she has nothing helpful to say, EVER!
This. Easy peasy and cheaper than the liquid formula.
Interestingly my pedi and hospital recommended RTF for the first few months - Iremember my pedi mentioning that formula in powder form is slightly less sterile (?) and even when I switched to powder we did not use water from the tap. I think around 6 months we used tap water.
