The Most embarrassing thing I'll ever ask....

TMI Warning....Since I'm a vaginal birth newbie, I have a question (yes I asked a "pro" but would like other input).....is it normal to not have control over your bowel movements? I had my first one this morning (at the hospital thankfully) and I felt the urge to go but it totally came out on its own and I couldnt stop it!  Its the most embarrassing thing ever but I'm wondering if anyone else has been through this and if it goes away? The nurse talked to me about it for awhile today but like I said I'm just wondering what others have experienced!

  • Ya, but I am still taking stool softeners, so there's not much pushing involved. Is that what you mean? I know ahead of time and make it to the toilet, but there isn't much extra time the first couple times - like the moment I felt like going, I had to book it.

  • See. This is one of those times where I wish the bump wasn't so googleable! I have issues with this still.. It definitely got better as time went on but I am definitely not the same as I used to be, especially after the 2nd one (I had pretty bad tearing both times). I have some runny poop issues as it is.. so when I have to go.. I definitely need to try to get to the bathroom pretty fast. But I had an experience pretty similar to yours in the hospital after I had eve... at that point everything was just so sore and stretched that I could control much of anything.

  • I've heard its common...I think kegels are supposed to help.
  • I know I have read on other boards that other moms had this issue and that it did resolve, although it seemed to be a range of time before it did.

They had me on softeners and senekot (?) which I think forces me to go (they think thats part of this issue).  Basically when I felt the urge I went to the toilet, but didnt make it and there was absolutely no ability to hold it in whatsoever. It just came right out and I couldnt stop it no matter how hard I tried....forget about the pushing-not needed!

  • I think the senekot has a strong laxative effect? I might just stick with the softeners.

Still having trouble here and we're almost 9 months out...but I pushed for three hours and five tears, a full episiotomy and finally a vacuum extraction. Med free. I did some damage down there.

Wow you poor thing!  I thought med free with forceps and an almost 3rd degree tear was bad...no more complaints here!

  • Ya, I would stop the senakot - its a stimulate laxative. Just keep taking the stool softener (colace/docusate) to reduce straining until your healed up.

Girl that is bad! Not gonna lie, I'm not sure I'll ever be the same. But, the muscles recover and it gets easier.

Can't wait to hear the birth story! Smile
