Update: Tegan's Staph Infection

Well, we did end up in the operating room today and the doctor flushed out the abscess and put in a shunt to keep the wound draining for the next week. For a bit there was some talk about keeping her overnight for IV antibiotics and monitoring, but after the surgery, the surgeon felt that she'd be ok just heading home. She can't go to daycare for a week, she has to take three warm baths a day and after every BM. I have a feeling the next few days should prove to be interesting... here we go!

Sorry it had to get to that point, but glad they could get her calm and comfortable for the procedure.
Did they give you any home care instructions for disinfecting to avoid spreading the bacteria? Any washcloths or towels used need to be sterilized daily. This may include checking your hot water temp to make sure your hot water washing machine cycle is hot enough. I'm sure you already know to wash your hands very well but remember it's not about antibacterial soap, it's about using warm water and plenty of soap and getting all the surfaces of the hands expecially under the nails (no artificials or polish! Although I know most mommies don't anyway). Short short nails for everyone.
They didn't give us instructions on sterilizing items used at home, but it only makes sense to use a washcloth once and sterilize it before using at again. We're not actually supposed to touch the area where she was the shunt, except to unbangage and rebandage before and after her baths. The doctor said the shunt itself should be all that's needed for drainage. I do know that I'll be spending a decent amount of time scrubbing the bath tub... lol! I have to admit I am nervous about where the staph originated from and having this happened a again, but short of sterilizing the entire house (which is impossible) I'm not really sure what else to do...
