Trying to Get Pregnant

Valentine's day

So it's coming...am I the only one that doesn't think it is a huge deal?  I mean a nice dinner and a little gift and card are great...but people really go overboard.  I was thinking of telling DH to put a spending limit on it.  We usually spend too much on each other on most holidays.  What are your thoughts/traditions? I'm in need of some budget friendly ideas...

  • We are trying to cut back too. I'm hoping to make a nice dinner at home and crack open a bottle of wine.

  • Its not that big of a deal to us either. We acknowledge it but nothing overboard. DH usually grills some steaks, I'll make some side dishes, and we'll open a bottle of wine or two and just chill. Oh yeah, and he usually sends me flowers at work.
  • I agree that it's not a big deal...DH and I usually don't exchange gifts on holidays, and Valentines Day is no different. We may go out to dinner, or just have a nice dinner at home, just the 2 of us. Our 1 year wedding anniversary is on February 20, so we are thinking about heading to the coast(We are in northern CA) and spending the day at the aquarium and going to one of our favorite restaurants. I definitely don't think you need to spend a lot of money to show each other that you love and care about one another. A cute card, a romantic dinner, maybe a movie, and some cuddling sounds perfect to me.

That sounds like a great plan to me! I think we will do the same.

  • Make a nice dinner at home. DH made a culinary board game for me. We are probably going to play that and see what we come up with. Can't wait!

  • DH is very generous when it comes to flowers and gifts even if not a holiday, this year we're going to dinner and movie to watch "The Vow" and will be exchanging gifts, I have to get to shopping !

  • We don't do anything. I think last year, our first as a married couple, I gave him a card and he got me a box of chocolates. I don't think we even went out or made a special dinner. Probably won't do anything this year either.
  • We are staying overnight at a hotel that is offering breakfast for 2, champagne, and 2 60 minute massages as the Valentine's Day "gift", then going to Fogo De Chao for my birthday. We probably wouldn't make a huge deal if it wasn't my birthday too.

  • All I have asked for in the last two years are chocolate overed strawberries from Godiva and dinner at home. My husbands birthday is three days before Valentines Day and mine is two weeks after that. No need in going totally broke in one month.

  • We usually don't exchange gifts on valentine's day.  Maybe just a card, and we go out for a niceish dinner.  One year we got a bunch of stuff to make extreme ice cream sundaes at home, which was fun, but that was before froyo was absurdly popular :).

  • We have don't usually exchange valentines gifts. My birthday is the week before and his is 2 weeks after. Plus our anniversary is the week after Christmas, so we usually just exchange gifts for birthdays and either Christmas or anniversary.

I've always thought the idea behind Valentines day was kinda silly, but I usually cook a nicer than usual dinner and make a dessert. This year I'm thinking a movie night at home and chocolate covered strawberries.

  • I hate Valentines Day.  Everywhere is marked up, even with a reservation we always end up waiting an hour for our table, the food is cold because the restaurant is busy, or we avoid all that but have to pay a fortune for the privilege.  This year we are staying in, DH is cooking dinner and we will probably rent a movie that is more likely to be an action or drama than a romance movie.

  • DH used to get me flowers, but I would feel anxious about the expense and he would sneeze because he's allergic.  All around, we'd feel terrible and not go to dinner or anything. We haven't done anything in years, aside maybe a nicer than normal dinner at home, a bottle of wine and a movie.

  • I'll be working that day but the next night DH and I are just going to cook a nice meal at home, not sure what yet. He normally gets me flowers no matter how many times I tell him not to spend the money on it.

  • MH & I just go out to dinner. Last year (even though we agreed no gifts...oops) I bought him a really nice beer mug, a 24oz bottle of his favorite expensive beer, & a sweet card. :) I wanted to get him a little something & will probably do the same this year. I just loved his reaction because it was a little surprise.

  • We usually don't do anything either....maybe dinner and rent a movie and cuddle on the couch with a glass of wine. Neither of us ever really thought of it as a real holiday
  • MH and I get each other gifts the day after. When they're marked way down. My dad always did that with my mom too. She still likes him 31 yrs later. V-day is so hokey...

  • We don't do anything at all. Sometimes DH will get me chocolates or flowers, which is almost always a surprise because I forget it's Valentine's Day. They're starting to celebrate it over here in the country I live in, but it's not in you face, so it's easy to forget if you're not looking for it. DH's bday i 2 weeks later, too, so I'm usually preoccupied looking for a birthday present!

I suggest celebrating on another night! It is too much to go out on the actual date!

We used to go out on the 21st because that was our dating anniversary but last year DH says its not our anniversary anymore now that we are married, our wedding anniversary is October 3 and I only get one anniversary. I might force him to reinstate it so we can skip Valentines Day lol.

  • We don't do anything major either.  One of the best vday gifts DH got me was from a local French bakery.  They do something called 'Eclair Your Love'.  They write cute messages on top of an eclair in pink frosting.  He got two of them with sweet messages on it.  Super cheap, super thoughtful, and incredibly delicious.  Maybe something cute like that would be nice?  Or make something yourself?

  • For the past few years we have made dinner and said no gifts. But that sweet husband of mine always wound up buying me something so I would look like a total a$$. This year I am getting him a real present.

  • DH and I just usually get eachother a card and we go out for a nice dinner. We don't do gifts for any holiday except Christmas and birthdays. Neither of us mind at all. I feel like date night is better than a random gift.

  • We never do much for Valentine's Day. Either dinner at a nice restaurant or at home. We give each other a card. Last year, he gave me a locket, but gift-giving on Valentine's Day is unusual for us.

  • We don't do gifts at V-day. We give each a card, typically, maybe some chocolates (because you should always take advantage of an opportunity for candy!) and then I make dinner which we eat with a nice bottle of wine (usually one from our stash).

I would guesstimate that our Valentine's Day costs under $150 total, and I could do it for less depending on what I make for dinner.

  • We're going to a restaurant in the city that does a pre fixe lunch, 3 courses for $25 pp. We've been dying to go anyway, V Day is just an excuse. Then we'll exchange gifts. I tried to suggest a spending limit but he balked at that. He usually goes way overboard because he knows he won't be able to once we have a LO.

Last year I made a fancy dinner at home (dark chocolate and orange rice pudding, mmmm!) and we watched movies. It was really nice.
