2nd Trimester

Anyone every had anemia during their pregnancy?

I have been struggling with serious fatigue and shortness of breath, just feel like I can't catch my breath. I'm  just so physically exhausted. I do work full time and I do have a little boy that is almost 2 but this just doesn't seem normal. On top of this I have been struggling with sinus infections for the last 10-12 weeks. I just started my 3rd round of antibiotic yesterday, things get better for about 3 weeks between prescriptions... so last week I wasn't really "sick". Anyway, I was telling my husband last week how I just haven't felt like I have ever got any of my energy back from when you are super tired at the beginning of the pregnancy. Then I just started paying closer attention to my body and I noticed that I often feel like I just got done running a mile or something and was out of breath. I have also noticed more heart palpitations ( I have those anyway) but there have definatly been more lately and they last a lot longer than normal. Dizziness and feeling like I'm going to faint... you get the point. Today at my 22 wk appt my dr drew some blood so we will know for sure. Just wondered if any of you have had this or have it now and how you felt and what your doctor suggested or did because of it. Thanks :)

Re: Anyone every had anemia during their pregnancy?

  • Hey neighbor!  I'm in JoCo too!  :)

I was anemic with DS.  My doc just put me on prescription prenatals that were made for anemia, with extra iron.  This time I'm having a lot of the same symptoms, especially dizziness, but I'm not testing anemic so far.  There's really no way to know for sure without testing, because all of those symptoms *could* be from an iron deficiency, or they could just be from pregnancy.  Glad they're testing you!  Either way, hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm anemic even NOT pregnant. I'm taking iron pills to help me out.
  • I haven't had to worry about anemia, but a friend of mine became dangerously anemic in her pregnancy. She couldn't figure it out because she ate iron-rich foods all the time, until I mentioned that calcium inhibits the absorption of iron. She had been drinking milk all day, so none of the iron was getting to her.

Make sure when you take iron, either in food or supplements, that you don't take calcium at the same time, or it won't have any effect.

  • I was diagnosed with anemia at my 12 week appointment with a regular doctor and I thought that it explained a lot becuase I had been constatnly exhausted! I would sleep at least ten hours a night and still need a nap after work in the afternoon! At my 16 week appointment I had been taking iron pills for just about 3 weeks and had noticed a huge difference but had also changed up my exercise regimine in that time so I had no clue what caused the sudden change. At that point I had switched to a midwife and she told me that my iron levels didn't quite qualify as seriously anemic.. She suggested that I get off the iron pills and start finding replacements for iron in my diet. Right now I'm drinking juice that is fortified with iron and filling my diet with a lot of leafy greans and veggies such as brocolli to come up with some extra iron. I like the idea of getting my iron from natural sources because I'm not a huge fan of choking down pills every day on top of my pre-natels.

I hope all went well and you get the results you needed. Talk to your doctor about some changes in your diet you might be able to make if you aren't wanting to take a pill for it. Good luck!

  • I was diagnosed with Anemia around 16 weeks.  I take an iron supplement (Slow Fe, 48 mgs) every morning with orange juice because the vitamin C is supposed to help it absorb better. In fact, FI brings my OJ to me right before he leaves for work in the morning and I chug it down with my pill and go right back to sleep.

Right after my dr caught it (I had terrible exhaustion and just felt horrible ALL the time.  I caught a cold and she did a blood draw to check my white cells, and that's when they discovered my hemoglobin was super low) my baby decided that meat was no longer something I could eat, so I have struggled to get enough iron since I'm not getting any from meat anymore.  There are days when I can tell I'm a little low, especially when I haven't eaten much, but for the most part the supplement has DRAMATICALLY helped.  It took about 2 weeks for it to really kick in though.  At our next appointment I am going to ask her to do another blood draw to check my hemoglobin to see how it is and if I need to add more iron to feel even better.

  • I was anemic to the point of having to get infusions every few months before I was pregnant, but the last time I went to the hematologist (right after my BFP) he was incredulous and said my iron count was better than it had been in years (and at that point I'd been almost 9 months without an infusion). Weird.

Anyway, I hope you don't have it, but for most it's an easily correctable issue.  :)

  • I'm anemic and currently take iron pills.  It helps me out and takes away some of the fatique.
