So I had my routine 36wk checkup today with my MW but I had noticed last night feeling off so I took my BP and it was high. Today at my appt it was high again and I had gained 7lbs and was puffy all over. I had a headache off and on since the weekend so they decided to check me for pre e. My labs came back ok but I am doing the 24 hr urine collection now.
Im just wondering if anyone on here has actually been diagnosed with pre e and if it affected your plans for natural birth, and if it did how so?
Re: little scare
So my actual birth story isn't very inspirational when it comes to natural birth and PreE due to a series of bad events, but what I can let you know is what my plans and intentions were.
My doctors were putting off inducing me as long as possible but the agreement was once I developed PreE I'd be induced immediately. (I started to develop PIH around week 37 so I was full term at the time). Because DS was full-term the risks of the PreE outweighed the risks of induction.
Had my BP (and protein, labs, etc) been under pretty good control, I would have had minimal restrictions to my original birth plan even with the induction. I'd have to have my BP taken more often (every 20-30 minutes) and might have my movement restricted depending on how my BP reacted to it, but other than that everything was planned to stay the same.
The problem was that my BP and labs ended up not being under good control. My PreE came on much more quick and severe than we anticipated so I had to be on a drug called Magnesium Sulfate to prevent eclamptic seizures. Due to the mag, I had many more restrictions. I wasn't allowed out of bed, had to have continuous fetal monitering, and wasn't permitted to eat or drink (although in hindsight I should have fought that last bit). Mag also made me feel awful (loopy like I was drugged up). They also weren't going to permit DS to room in if I had needed to stay on the mag post-partum, but that didn't end up happening (long story).
So basically, for me, I don't think it would have been so bad if it weren't for the magnesium sulfate. Maybe talk to your OB/MW and find out if you'll need it and if there's any way to avoid it.
