"That is what is wrong with this generation"

I feel like I am constantly hearing how bad this generation is. Between those FB statuses about the decrease in spanking making our group of kids absolutely horrible to random people saying "this generation has no respect or discipline".

Honestly this annoys me to know end. First I know generation were no angels and know my parents were no ether! Honestly my grandma said that she was good when her parents were around but the moment they were out of sight her and her friends were just as bad as us.  Seriously when my moms generation says this I kind of wonder if they realize that they were the ones who raised the parents of this generation. I have met some lovely kids and some not so lovely kids...this goes for adults as well. Considering my Aunt, who is always saying stuff like this, had a kid before she graduated high school and has major anger issues I really don't see how the way she was raised was really all that effective. Sure maybe kids at one hid some stuff from their parents, but that is a far cry from not doing bad stuff!

Stuff has changed and I'm sure some stuff could be improved upon by our kids but really I fail to see how the generations are that bad now days compared to old ones. It really makes no sense to me

Usually it is paired with the spanking talk which I guess I don't get because my mom never spanked and we don't spank, honestly I am sure every generation has some pro and some anti "XYZ" in discipline.  But honestly it is brought up ANYTIME kids are brought up it seems. Really what is all that different?

Am I missing something?

  • I think every older generation complains about younger generations.  It just seems to be the way things go.  I do think there are some things that our generation is missing the boat on, in some ways (spanking isn't one of them), but ... anyway.

I think it's just b*tching... things change with every generation.  :)

I guess that is true! I probably am just noticing it now that I have a kid!

  • I actually think this generation is pretty well-behaved compared with my generation (born in the 60's) and the one before it.  I was thinking the other day about how much trash used to be on the ground when I went to school, and I lived in a nice neighborhood.  You don't see that these days.  Also, I can think of many instances when the teens a little older than me were super disrespectful of authority.  It was common to call police officers "pigs," etc, back in the 70's.

The only thing that weirds me out a little about growing up today is how casual sex seems to be.  But I know that has been changing for the last century.  I certainly wouldn't have wanted to live by the rules my parents lived by!  I know tons of women in my mom's class got married because they "had to," then ended up getting divorced 20 years later.  That doesn't seem very functional.   The new generation will figure it out for themselves.

  • I think it's hard for older generations of people to appreciate that younger people have different values than they do. It doesn't mean that anyone's parenting is ineffective, just that our goals and values are different. I mean, as long as the end result is a happy, productive person; does it really matter how you get there?

I had a similar conversation with my grandmother about this recently. It blows her mind that my brother and I make decisions without consulting our parents or considering what they might think or feel about the choices we make. She sees it as a "lack of respect" for our elders, and thereby a failure on my mom's part. The reality of the situation is that my brother and I were raised to think for ourselves, and we do. Grandma likes to take the qualities about us she finds frustrating and turn them into a "what's wrong with young people today" tirade.

    Confused
