Disability advice

Hi Ladies -

This might be a silly question but I"m going to throw it out there.  It was mentioned to me that I should look into CA state laws to see if C qualifies for disability.  Our RC no longer covers C "outside" therapies now that he is in preschool.  We still do ST and OT twice a week which adds up when its private.  Any little bit would really help to cover the costs.  Anyone know if ASD is covered under state disability?

This is the criteria that SSI would use to evaluate for benefits.

Every state has different rules/laws, i'm not familiar with CA.  For example in WV qualifying for SSI automatically gives you a medicaid card, in VA it doesn't, you have to apply separately.  In WV, if you make too much for SSI they have Medicaid for disabled child, in VA, they don't, they have waivers, but your child has to be severely delayed, older than a toddler and meet other criteria.

So essentially you want to look into SSI (if you are lower income) or medicaid waivers if not.

  • I would call and ask.  I believe it does in Georgia, but his income was considered both my husband and my income so we made too much to qualify.  It was a pretty easy process to apply.

  • Thanks Ladies I'll do some digging.  I really appreciate the advice on VA we are looking to move there hopefully within the year but no timeline set yet.
