3 out of 10 kids in LO's class have a confirmed case of RSV. LO started coughing yesterday but has had no fever. I already took him to the pedi 2 weeks ago when I thought he was sick but it turns out he was fine ($30) I took him to Urgent Care this past Sunday for pink eye ($55) which he contracted from day care. Then I had to pay ($28) for his eye drops for pink eye. Ugh its turning out to be an expensive month!
I don't want to make an unnecessary trip to the pedi. Also LO gets the monthly shots to protect him from getting RSV but I found out just like the flu shot it does not protect against every strain.
Re: How can I tell if my child has RSV?
I was on the look out for a fever so don't look for that? Watch the breathing instead?
Thanks. I'm xing my fingers for you and your LO too.
The thing is, even if it is RSV (they can test for it with a nose swab, kind of like do with a throat culture for strep), it's a virus and they won't give you anything to treat it, it just has to run its course. We found out Lexi had it when the only symptoms she was showing were congestion (so, so much snot!!) and a slight cough. I had them test at her 6 month appt bc several kids in her class had it and i suspected it, so I made them test before pumping her full of vaccines.
I was kind of glad we knew, because we went ahead and kept her at home once we found out so we didn't expose more kids. She was diagnosed on Tuesday, no fever until Thursday (dr said it was normal for them to have their worst day on day 4 or 5 of it). Fever just got up to 102 and came down quickly with alternating Tylenol & Motrin. She was back to herself by Saturday! (although her pedi did tell me she got over it a lot quicker than most kids)
They didn't give us anything for it, just told us to be super aggressive with the snot suctioning to try to keep her ears clear of fluid (ear infections are super common with RSV) and to try to keep the mucous out of her chest. We never had any chest congestion at all, but they told us to listen for wheezing or any kind of labored breathing. They can give you a nebulizer/breathing machine to treat that symptom if it pops up.
We just stayed home and gave her lots of snuggles, made sure to use her humidifier a lot, we sat in a steamy bathroom a couple of times a day (she ate better in the bathroom actually! since the steam broke up the congestion), and suctioned her nose with saline spray + nosefrida every few hours.
Good luck! Hope sweet Lamar feels better and you guys can avoid it! The sign is back up at our daycare, so I know some more kids have it. I'm holding my breath that we don't get it again!
Thanks I was hoping you would respond to this post with some first hand experince. I am hoping he does not get it. This shots cost me a lot of time and $$$
