When we went to the gastro the other day, the gastro said it would be good for Danny to have added cereal to his bottles, to thicken the feed since he's still having runny poop all the time and his reflux is getting worse. My regular pedi was on board with the idea. So, we bought the cereal last night and we put in the prescribed amount (1 tsp for every 4 ounces...since he only takes 4 ounces, 1 tsp). It clogged the nipples of the bottles! Danny was also exhausted from a truly long day and stayed asleep for a bit, so when he only had an ounce, I didn't think it was too big of a deal...This was about 1 AM.
Baby started crying around 2 AM, so my husband took him down, and he comes back up at 3 AM, cursing up a storm. Danny by this point is screaming inconsolibly, red in the face. My husband is going "F--- the cereal! The baby is just not going to eat!".."We should just give up and sell the baby because we broke him!" (MY HUSBAND IS A DRAMA LLAMA!) I took Danny downstairs, fed him the bottle without the cereal. And Danny was WIIIIIIIDE awake until 545 AM. Took him upstairs...and not too long after putting him down, I hear a grunt and a splatter...Danny had a pooptrastrophy. Clean up the pooptrastrophy. We lay down at 615. Husband's alarm goes off at 645. I seriously started crying because Danny was starting to fuss and I was so damn tired.
My husband called my MIL, who came over to watch the baby so I can sleep.
She left one Danny settled down and fell asleep, put him up in our room and she went to work. I got up, and I look at the Danny's Feed Log and she wrote down that she fed him cereal...not from the bottle, but from a bowl.
.....I kind of don't know how I feel about that. Danny seems fine. He's not damp from spit up. And he's sleeping very soundly and comfortably. I'm not sure if I should be mad, glad, or what. I think it's too early to start the cereal in that way...but I seriously just don't know.
Re: Baby Cereal...& A sleepless night vent
First, I'm do sorry that you had such a rough night!
Sec
Sorry about that! Posting from my phone!
Second, it's great that you're not angry with your MIL (I'm not sure I would be so calm... But it was totally an honest mistake.) And 20-30 years ago our mothers all gave us cereal WAY before the 4-6 month mark.
Third, I'd call the pedi just to see what they say about the cereal.
My neighbors son has reflux and they had the same problems with the cereal clogging the bottles so they cut the holes on the nipples just a bit bigger. I do not know if this is reccomended or not but it works for them.
I hope things get better for you guys.
The Pedi and the Gastro both approved the cereal in the bottle. But I want the pedi's opinion about having it from a bowl. Pedi is in at 1 PM and he'll call me back then.
...Honestly, I'm too tired to be mad. I think I'm more hazy than anything else. I feel like I don't know what to do with this information. The lack of sleep is really screwing up my brain, and badly.
Hugs!!! I'm sorry that you had to go through that! Your GI should have told you to cut the nipples to let the cereal flow through easier. You cut an x into the nipple, I'm sure you can find instructions on the internet by a simple search.
And I wouldn't be mad at your MIL, its the same substance, just a different delivery method. Its not going to hurt your son in anyway. And he's sleeping, which is a wonderful thing.
My advice is, if the gastro and pedi ok'd the cereal, who cares what vessel it is delivered in!!! Sounds like the whole family is stressed out (including that cutie pie little danny) and everyone needs to do whatever it takes to make life easier!!!
I wouldn't be too worried about how he gets the cereal if it helps him to be satisfied. I would make the cereal with formula (or breast milk) to make sure that he's still getting the calories that he needs. I think that's part of what they worry about with cereal--if you make it with water it only has 20 calories while formula has more, which is what the baby needs.
Good luck with the rest of the day. Babies can be so frustrating!
This! We have to give DD cereal with her night bottles too and we bought a level three nipple and made the hole bigger. We give her 2 tsp. with her 4 oz bottle. It seems to really be helping with her spit up.
