Blocked duct?

DS slept a few hours longer than normal last night. Now today my right breast is sore up near my armpit, just below. There's also a pea sized lump there and the whole area is tender to the touch.

Is this a plugged duct or something else? What can I do to help it go away if it is plugged?

Re: Blocked duct?

  • Sounds like a blocked duct to me.  I would take a long hot shower and massage the lump while you are in there and let the hot water hit the same spot.  Then as soon as you get out of the shower I would feed your LO and try to have hime drain your breast as much as possible.  You can also massage your breast while you are feeding to further try to break it up.  Hope you get it to disappear quickly!

  • I just had a clogged duct recently. I was pumping extra on that side, nursing as often as I could on that side, and before bed I would run a diaper under hot water and put it on there. It stays warmer longer then a wash cloth, it was awesome :)
  • Sounds like it to me. I had a clogged duct a few weeks ago- it actually woke me up at night b/c my breast hurt so badly. I pumped- and didn't get much for about 30 minutes. I started compressions in that area, and after about 10 minutes of massaging it must have unclogged because I got like 3 oz in 10 minutes.

I didn't know to try the heat, otherwise I would have tried that. If you can't get Charlie to nurse long enough on that side to unclog is, try pumping it- that way you don't lose the milk (I can't remember if supply is an issue for you or not?). GL friend :)
