Did you fast before your GTT?

With DD I remember specifically being told to fast before I went. This time around, my Dr. said it didn't matter. I could go in tomorrow at 4:00,  but that means I'll have been eating all day and I don't want it to effect my results. What did you do?

Re: Did you fast before your GTT?

  • I didn't do anything special.  My appt. was at 4PM too and I just ate normal during the day.

  • I went in around 230 and I didn't fast before. I ate normally throughout the day.

  • I was told for the 1 hour test no fasting, for the 3 hour test fasting is necessary.  My appt. was at 10:10 and I ate a normal breakfast.

  • Which test are you doing?  The 2-hour is now standard here and you need to fast for that one.  With DS, the 1-hour test was standard and no fasting required.

  • I just had my one hour this morning and because I had heard so many times about women failing the one hour and passing the 3 hour I asked why they don't just skip the one hour....  The response was very informative.  You do not need to fast before the 1 hour test because it is what she called a screening.  All they are looking for is what your body should normally be doing/processing with the foods you eat.  So they do one draw and screen. IF you fail that then you move to the 3 hour test where you fast and they actually TEST more thoroughly with 3 draws and are testing specific markers etc.  Of course there are some variations from office to office but my appointment was at 9 and she told me to eat a regular breakfast.

This. When I had DD they were still doing just the 1 hour and I ate breakfast normally before the test.

  • My 1hr test is next week, and the directions say to not eat anything for 2 hours before having the drink, to prevent a false positive. I am okay with this, because I don't have to be fasting all morning, but just a while before.

  • They told me to eat a small breakfast before so the drink wouldn't make me sick.

Yep, my OB told me to eat a normal breakfast before coming in so I wasn't on an empty stomach.  They did recommend I avoid super sugary breakfast foods (like waffles/syrup, fruit juices, etc) and carbs.
