I ate ice cream. I just couldn't stand it anymore. Now I am probably going to have to throw it away. That was just too hard for me. Man, this is tough sometimes.
I'm sorry I cant imagine how hard that must be on you, but its natural to slip a little here and there. Throw the ice cream away so its not staring at you every day the way delicious foods do, and try to remember its only a few more weeks! (easier said than done, I know)

I agree with the PP. It must be really hard to stick to your diet. But its ok to have eaten ice cream. You're only human.
FWIW, I feel bad when I eat things I know I shouldnt. Like pop.. I havent touched it in months but the last time I did I felt like a bad mom. (not saying that the ladies that drink pop are bad moms, I just feel bad)
a little bit won't hurt the baby (you didn't eat the whole 5-gallon party tub, right?). just use the guilt from this experience as a reminder to stay strong throughout the rest of the pregnancy.
I am a big fan of a low carb diet and I have an ice cream solution if you have a home ice cream maker.
It's not quite as good as regular ice cream but it's a good stand in. I get a package of Sugar Free, Fat Free Jello Pudding mix (chocolate, banana, cheeseckae and butterscotch are my favorites) and then I mix it with Fat Free Half and Half or the Low-Carb Milk. Then I put it into the ice cream freeze and voila! You have yummy frozen pudding goodness. Sometimes I even put a spoonful of peanut butter in with the chocolate pudding while it's mixing.
Just a few more weeks and you won't have to feel so guilty about splurging!

I'm right there with you...I ate a Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich today(I have GD, too.) I know it's terrible...I should have never done it. But, I was just so irritated and...I don't know...it just happened. I don't keep them in the house..one of my husbands friends brought it over the other night and never ate it and left it here. It's been staring at me since Saturday and I completely broke down and ate it.
Hi. Remember me? I have GD, too. Ice cream is totally fine! Give yourself a break. A lot of ice creams are only 1 carb per serving (Edy's, Breyer's, Turkey Hill, etc). My dietician okayed it for the occasional treat. And seriously, a serving of ice cream now and again is not going to ruin all of the hard work you have done for GD.
If you are worried about it, test your sugar like you would after a meal. See if you have a crazy high number or if you are in range.
I hope you enjoyed it! And stop feeling guilty or disappointed in yourself!!!

Thanks, Ladies. I am feeling better about it already. Although, I probably won't go doing that again. But that homemade recipe looks really good and seeing as I do have an ice cream maker, I may just give it a try. Or invest in low sugar ice cream so I don't have these fits anymore.

Yeah, I am confused. I also have GD. My diet plan allows 3 snacks per day of 30g carbs each. A cup of regular ice cream (depending on brand) is usualy approx 30g carbs so I often have it for my night snack. Is the concern that you have previously had a bad reaction to ice cream or something? As far as sweets go it's pretty good because it also has protein.
I have GD too and Ice cream is ok as long as your within your carb limit. a 1/2 cup ice cream usually is about 15g of carbs. Its not alot but its better than nothing! Also I've found that sugar free Jell-o is my new best friend! I can eat as much as I want and I dont have to feel guilty, you can even have some whip cream on it and the carb count is still really low. I know its hard to stick to a strict diet and I have struggled with it this last week. Hang in there, only a few more weeks!

Is this true?!!! My nutritionist was a NAZI!!! She also told me I could not have any sugar and I should not gain any more weight from here on out- that was about 9 weeks ago. Back when I had a total gain of 20 lbs. I started small, too. Hmmm... I've been concerned because even on this diet I am gaining a pound a week-ish still. I thought something was amiss.
Well, I will still be careful about my carbs, but I won't be so freaked out about it from here on out.
Wow- that does sound harsh! Is she accustomed to working with people with GD (versus Type II Diabetes)? I don't know your exact case, but it sound like you're very normal for weight gain and you are growing a baby so that energy has to come from somewhere and you don't want it coming from your fat stores so the baby is not exposed to ketones.... do they have you testing your urine for ketones?
no, not testing for ketones. I have noticed when I eat a little more normal- like add a few carbs, he seems to do a little better movement wise. Makes me wonder if he has been suffering from my extreme lack of carbs.

Some of the GD docs and nutritionists are crazy strict. I get wanting to be careful with GD, but sometimes they just seem a little nuts. Most diabetes organizations now pretty much say a carb is a carb is a carb. You definitely want to try and avoid those that spike your sugars (like juice, soda, and other straight sources of sugar), but if you are having a appropriately portioned treat like ice cream and making sure you aren't having a high sugar reaction to it, you are fine!
By the way, to balance it with some protein: warm up a little bit of peanut butter and pour that on top. So good and it feels like you are getting to have a sundae!!!
And seriously...just check your sugars to see how you react. If eating a bowl of ice cream gives you a 200 after an hour, it's probably not for you. If you are in range, then enjoy it in moderation and don't beat yourself up about it.
As for weight gain, this is where you can ignore the nutritionist and work with your OB. My OB has been wonderful and he was very clear: he will manage my pregnancy for me and baby: weight gain, delivery options, etc. The GD doc is just in charge of the diabetes. He was pretty blunt and kind of funny: he said just because a GD doc takes a semester of maternal medicine, that does not make them an expert. He has been caring for pregnant women and delivering babies for 20+ years. Ahh...one of the many reasons I love my OB!

I know a few PP have said this, but I'm GD too...my snack every night before bed is half a cup vanilla ice cream and some melted peanut butter (all natural) for protein. It really helps with cravings.
That having been said, I ate too much tonight, so I totally get what you are feeling. Once in awhile I just fall off the wagon. I am already planning all the carb-y things I want to eat after the baby comes. I'm sorry for those of you who sound like your dietitians are so strict!!! Mine weighs me to make sure I'm not losing weight, and reminds me that I do need to eat carbs just in moderation and with protein. But it's still very hard and I know we all can't wait to be done with it!
