Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Need Help with 2nd Carseat... Suggestions?

Hi, all!

Right now we have the Chicco Keyfit carseat and two different bases.  DS is starting at daycare and my husband and I share the pickup/dropoff, so we needed the extra base, unfortunately.  Expensive!  Question about these (possibly a stupid one!)... they're good till DS is 22 pounds according to me looking it up on the Babies R Us website.  Any idea when that happens for the average kid?  He's 18 pounds now and already getting heavy at only 5.5 months!   PS I HATE the stroller that came with this travel system.  It doesn't even fit my diaperbag underneath the carseat!  I use the snap and go only... He'll be OUT of daycare for the summer (I'm a teacher), so these carseats MIGHT get us all the way to the fall, right?

Ok, onto the real question... We need to get a "convertible" carseat next, right?  Will we have to get TWO of them, since DH and I share daycare pickup and dropoff, though?  We both work 30 minutes in opposite directions, so we can't switch cars.  That seems like such a big expense, though!  How long will he be in that for?  Is that the "precurser" to the booster seat?  Is this a necessary step or do some kids skip the convertible carseat?  If we DO have to get one, does anyone recommend one that's not TOO expensive since I think we'll have to buy one for each car?

Thanks in advance!

  • Britax are great quality.  They also make a seat that goes from convertible to booster (I believe it starts at 20lbs.)

  • Just wanted to add that BRU is having their trade in sale right now--so bring an old something (could even be from Goodwill) and get 25% off.

We have the Britax that goes up to 55 pounds--rear or forward facing.  I figured after 55 lbs they could go in the booster.

You have to be at least 2 for that seat.

You can see a list of recommended seats at www.carseatblog.com. We have Britax seats, but I got them on super clearance. There are several good seats out there. Most kids will need to go from a convertible, then to a booster, if not a harnessed booster. Ex: My DD went from a Graco infant seat, to a Britax Marathon, and then to a Recaro ProSport. The Recaro will be the last seat she needs. The only reason I switched her from her Marathon, is because I won the Recaro seat. She would have had to switch eventually, but probably would have made it to 5 in her Britax seat. However, she is TINY. Way smaller than most kids her age. A lot of kids will outgrow the Britax seats around 4ish, but still need to go to another seat until they are of maturity to sit in a booster. My DD is harnessed in her Recaro seat, and I fully expect that she will be for at least another 2 years before moving to booster mode.

Most kids will outgrow that seat WAY before they come close to 55lbs. So, chances are that you may need another harnessed seat before going to a booster.

  • The best thing you could probably do is purchase two convertable car seats. We have a Britax Boulevard 70 CS for our main car seat. The one that my daughter uses most and a lesser expensive Britax for the one that she's in sometimes. I would reccommend doing your research for car seats that fit into your budget and has the highest safety rating. Most convertable car seats now can be used up to 40lbs rear facing and up to 65 to 70 lbs forward facing. (Keep in mind that American Academy of Pediatrics now reccommends that children be kept rear facing till the minimum age of 2) Another good reason why convertables are a great option. And definitely do NOT exceed the height and weight limit on the infant car seat you have now, it wasn't crash tested with anything higher then the 22lb max weight.
