How do you know when contrax are no longer BH?

I mean other than there being a pattern to them, when can you tell that your contrax are no longer just BH?  I wouldn't say they are necessarily painful just yet but they feel lower and a tiny bit sharper (can't really think of how to describe them).  Last time my water broke and I never really went into labor so I'm not really sure what I'm feeling.

Re: How do you know when contrax are no longer BH?

  • This is just my experience, but my BH contractions were uncomfortable and tight, but not really painful.  There wasn't really a pattern to them, and they were often brought on by me standing or walking.  The real contractions were increasingly painful and there was a clear start and end to them, and they followed a pattern.

this...my BH did often hurt though, but like Jill said, they were brought on by something.  And sometimes they even fell into a rhythm, but if I laid down and drank a glass of water, they would start spacing back out and eventually go away.
  • I had a VERY irritable uterus and had constant, non-stop BH contractions from 21wks on.  They were never painful, though, and it just felt like a tightening.  Sometimes I would have more than "the limit" during an hour, but they were never ever consistent.  UNTIL....the night I went into labor.  I was 35w6d, and about 2am, I started to notice a pattern.  They were coming every 4-5 minutes.  They still felt exactly the same, but they were regular....for about an hour and a half.  Then my water broke, so there was no question I was in labor.  45 min later, full-on "OMG, GET ME AN EPIDURAL" contractions started.  Yeah, those felt a lot different :)  So, all that said....I think when they started to get regular was when I probably went into pre-labor.

  • BH's for me felt like I was doing a situp, even when relaxed in a chair/bed.

Contractions felt like (TMI) I had to poop, really bad... came in waves, kinda like PMS cramps... and for ME, were only low down. Like, really low.

(when I thought I was having issues this time around, I was told that the contractions can happen all over your belly, not just down low.)

When it came time that they were "real" there was NO mistaking it for me. I KNEW!

  • I didn't get tones of bH this pregnancy.. But I knew soemthing was up when I was getting more cramping and it really did feel like terrible/horrible menstral cramps.. And they got stronger as the hours went on.. I also had my membranes stripped so I was way more aware that something might be up..
  • My contrax are like a painful, rhythmic, tightening that comes in waves every 5-10 min. all day every day, unless I stand and then it's every 2-3. I had to establish a new baseline for what needs a L&D visit, and that is whether they are so painful that I have to breathe through them. My doc says the only difference in real labor and BH is whether your cervix is changing or not, and only they can tell that. Guess everyone is different, but if you're noticing something that feels off, definitely call your doc.
  • Honestly my real contrax felt just like strong BH contrax. So much so that I didn't realize I was really in active labor until i arrived at the hospital and found I was 6cm dilated, 100% effaced. They had just gotten somewhat closer together and that's the only reason we called the OB. So GL and keep on timing!
