Afternoon Preschool?

Who  does it? (Mindy, I think, Anyone else?)

Our options for Eve's preschool next year are: m-f 9-1130am OR m-th 12:30-3pm. DH and I talked about it briefly this morning and we are leaning toward afternoon. One because its is one less day a week.. and two because we can keep her in her normal morning activities, swimming lessons, music class, and if she decides to do a sport or something at the Y, we could do that in the mornings too.  Eve rarely naps anymore, so thats not an issue for me,

But.. I have a lot of reservations about it too.. Natalie's nap schedule for one..   She will be down to 1 nap probably by then, so I'd have to hurry to make sure she gets down right after dropping Eve at school and possibly wake her to pick Eve up.. Also, I worry if it will be a LOT for Eve on days where she has an activity in the morning and then basically straight to school.. and third, I feel like we will never have a day to just run around all day, like occassionally my mom and I will take the girls out shopping in the afternoon and then do dinner at my parents house after or something.. and if i have errands to do while eve is at school, Natalie won't nap at all,  ya know?

Re: Afternoon Preschool?

  • I like morning preschool - but that's just me.

DD is fresh in the mornings, better energy, ready to go.  She loves preschool and comes home tired at noon, and then it's nice because we convene for lunch.  I spent the time she's in preschool, running errands and getting stuff done.

But, you know your child, so if she doesn't seem tired and can do it, why not.

We ran into the nap issues too.  I had to pick up DD at noon, and the baby was napping at 10 (and 2), but then it moved towards 11 or later, so it was too late for her to take a nap and for me to get to preschool at noon, so we wiped out her morning nap and consolidated (at 10m)

  • Sounds like your cons outweigh your pros. I think morning will allow her the option to crash a day or two during the week. If she is in Afternoon prepare for a much earlier bedtime.

I am not doing afternoon because I will want him to nap/rest still. But the preschool I am leaning towards is only 2.5 hours 2 days a week for 3 yrs old.

  • Is it within walking distance? I can't decide if I want to commit to a 5 day pre-K b/c packing up the kids 5 days in a row sounds like such a PITA.

My vote is for mornings too. Now he goes 9:15-11:45 T/th comes home wiped out, we eat lunch, talk about his day at school and he takes a good nap :)

  • We have our fingers crossed G gets a spot in the 3 day morning program next year, because the only other options for 4s are 5 day programs, morning or afternoon.  It sounds like nap schedules would become an issue, so I'd lean toward that.  Can you do swimming, etc. with her or on weekends?
  • There's no way I would try to fit an afternoon nap into like 1.5 hours. Do you HAVE to send her to that school? I definitely wouldn't do 5 days if I didn't have to. Esp if I wanted to continue a bunch of other activities too.

Yeah, we're pretty positive we're staying with this school. I think any other program locally (although WAY cheaper) would be a big step backwards for her and she'd be really bored.

I guess I will think harder about the morning v. afternoon thing.. I guess it would be OK if she didn't do music class anymore..i could just bring Natalie,  and they do offer swimming in the afternoons for her age group..  Its also $50 more a month for the mornings since its an extra day a week (but it comes out cheaper per day, ya know?), but I'm trying to not let that influence my thoughts too much. :)

And it is "technically" walking distance.. its about a mile (its by Tops) but we've never walked there.. and I can't picture myself getting up extra early to walk there by 9am. :)

  • Tyler goes afternoons.  There are some advantages to afternoons.  Homewise, it will be nice to have the afternoon to yourself with one away at school and the other napping.  If she goes mornings, you wont be able to get out with her in the afternoon anyway because N will be napping.  And being home afternoons, E has to try to stay quiet all afternoon so she wont wake up N.  If she goes afternoons, that gives you all morning to take the girls out to do different activities.  And it allows you to have the occasional lazy morning where you can take your time getting the girls dressed, fed, etc because you don't have to be anywhere until later.

School wise, less parents want to send their kids in the afternoon so class size may be smaller.  Afternoon classes in general tend to be more mellow and allow for more quality think time.  Teachers also tend to be a bit more relaxed in the afternoon because they aren't frazzled from what ever happened trying to get out of the house, or their drive in, or lack of coffee, etc.  The roads are more likely to be clear and less traffic on your way in.
