Two Under 2

City Mini vs. City Select

I'm sorry, the bump search function doesn't work, please please humor me and help me with the great stroller debate.

I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down between these two. I currently have the City Mini single and really like it. I was set on the double City Mini, but when we went to Buy Buy Baby I was very surprised that we really liked the Select. It seemed like it would be a lot easier to manuever and it folded flatter (I know you have to take the seat off to do so). I do have some concerns about the size of the seats, the recline, and some of the reviews, but I'm still leaning that way.

Does anyone have a recommendation on the above or tandem vs. side by side in general?

Re: City Mini vs. City Select

  • I only have the city select and I chose it mostly b/c it was a double or single. When DS2 cames, DS1 went to school 3 days a week already. There were plenty of times I only have 1 kid and when we go to like DS1's speech therapy I use the CS as a single b/c DS1 can walk the short distance. It's also nice to be able to switch the seats around. DS2 really liks to see me so he's spent most of the time facing me.

The major downside for us is that DS1 is a tall kid (39in, 36lbs at 2.5yo) and doesn't fit very well in the seat anymore. He can handle it for a little bit but we couldn't make him sit in it a long time and he can't nap in it anymore. We use the BOB when we go to Disney World and sometimes at the zoo. Alos the whole cupholder thing annoys me. None of the ones I've tried I've liked so far.

  •  I did not like the idea of tandem so much, but worried a SBS would be too bulky and not fit through doors, so I almost went with the CS when Albeebaby had the white diamond double CS for $499.  However, I ultimately went with the CM for several reasons (other than price), I will list a few quickly.  First, I already have a single stroller I can use if I want that... so I only needed a double. I thought the CM was easier to fold and throw in the car.  I liked the idea of different seat positions for the CS, but then read a review about the CS that hit home regarding kid size and basically the only position that would really fit us would be both facing front (leg room, weight, etc would eliminate other positions). So far I am happy with the CM... and doors (my only real fear with the SBS) have not been an issue.

This is my fear. My main reason for a double is for the big outings, and I'd hate to not be able to use it for those. DD is pretty small, but who knows what DS will be like.

  • I had both and kept the city select. I found the city mini (or any SBS) a major PITA to maneuver indoors. The city select isn't perfect, but it really works well for us. I love that it can go from a single to double and I can't wait to get the glider board for DD. My DD is 36" and about 26lbs and she has plenty of room in her seat. The canopy has two height settings as does the foot rest. The ability to recline w/ two seats can be an issue, but for the most part it isn't a problem. When using a car seat in the back the front seat can recline no proble, it's when you add the second seat that you give up some space to recline. If my DD really needs to recline(which is rare) I just turn her front seat back.

If you are more worried about the baby, then I'd get it. I still use it quite a bit and even if your DS is big he'll be fine it for at least 2years and probably more. And by that time he'll probably be wanting to follow big sis anyways.

  • We chose the City Mini not only for the price, but because we already had a single stroller in case we only went out with one child at a time.  I also think it may be lighter than the CS.  The seats of the CS are too small, IMO.  My DD is 4 and DS is 18mo and they both fit in the CM without a problem and we use it daily for long walks to and from DD's preschool which is 1.5 miles away from our home.  DD is getting a bit big for it so we bought the glider board and are expecting LO#3 in April.
  • Love, love, love our CM!! No issues maneuvering indoors because it fits through a standard doorway. (I always thought that I'd want a tandem, but then I realized that many of them are so long that they're tougher to maneuver than a side by side.) It's lightweight, folds flat, steers like a dream and both boys are super comfy in it. Plus, I got the 2010 model on sale and got a great price. Couldn't be happier with it!
