DIY wrap, HELP!

I feel so dumb and lost right now! After seeing a few blogs etc that say you can easily make a no-sew moby type wrap, for cheap, I was so excited. I looked at a few googled sites and thought I could just go to Joann Fabrics asking for cotton knit material. I know nothing about fabrics, or sewing, which is why the whole no-sew thing sounded fabulous Wink I mentioned to the women at the store that what I saw online mentioned it might curl slightly at the edges, but that you didn't need to sew/hem it, and they had NO idea what I was talking about. Now I feel super lost. I bought nothing for fear that if I used the wrong material it wouldn't be safe. And the only material I thought might be it was $10 a yd therefore would have cost more than a moby.

WHAT am I missing??? TIA!

  • I'm totally not a fabric expert so hopefully someone else will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think cotton gauze is the only real 'no-sew' option.  I'd imagine that any Moby-like cotton knit would fray pretty quickly.

Have you looked around for a used Moby?  I'd bet that with a little searching you can find one for around $15 on craigslist or at a consignment store, and unless you find a great sale you're likely to spend that much on fabric anyway.

  • I think cotton jersey is what you're looking for.  Its like t-shirt material.  It wont fray, just curl at the edges like you mentioned.  You could also try osnaburg/muslin to make a woven wrap that will allow back/hip carries.  Cotton gauze is acceptable too like PP said. Im not sure what the price will be, but JoAnn usually has good sales and you might be able to find a coupon online or in a store flyer.

I'd also compare prices with used Moby wraps, it might actually be cheaper.  Check the FSOT forum at thebabywearer.com (you have to register), and spots corner at hyenacart.com, or even a local Once upon a child or similar consignment store.

  • I'm using a jersey knit fabric to make some. 6 yards will make three wraps. If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, get it from there. There's also a 40% off any item coupon on their website. :)

  • Cotton Jersy is the fabric that you want HOWEVER the jersy that they have at Joanns has way more stretch than the Moby fabric, and runs about 10 a yard which is why eventhough I sew I bought a Moby.

I have a sleepy wrap which is made of a similar stretch fabric to the jersy for sale at Joanns and it was only good for about the first 2.5 months before the pull of DD started to be uncomfortable, at 3.5 months the Moby is still nice.

If you live anywhere near NY or LA in the fashion districts you can find fabric for 1/4 the price of Joanns.
