C-sections

stitches vs staples

My last c/s I was given staples and although I had no complications, I have a keloid (sp) scar (which I've never had).  I moved and have a new OB and this one recommended stitches.

Does anyone have experience with both? Did they heal differently/same?  Did you feel more comfortable with one over the other?

Re: stitches vs staples

  • I have only had stitches, but I can barely see my scar. If I have to have another cs I will be getting stitches again.

  • I had stitches, my c-section was a very last minute thing so I didnt have a chance to do my research and see if I had the option on which one I got... I am glad though that I got stitches, cause with the staples they have to go and remove them... I like mine that disolved!

  • I had traditional staples with ds and stitches and dissolving staples with dd.  Really, either way was fine with me.

  • I had staples with DD1 and also developed a keloid scar. It was an emergency c/s and my OB didn't do it. My 2nd and 3rd were scheduled and my OB performed both. He sliced off the keloid scar and stitched me. The scar is still not perfect but 1000x better than after my first. It really made a huge difference.

  • I had staples and my scar is mostly barely visible. My incision re-opened post up and the spots where it opened are lumpy and visible, but the rest isn't.
  • I had internal (dissolving) staples. I loved them. It was very different than I expected as there was nothing on the outside of my incision that needed to be removed or messed with. The same day as surgery it already looked like a healed incision! Now, 22 mo after the scar is barely even visible. I will have the same with this LO and I am so happy!

  • I didn't have either. I had a doctor from France (she was in Canada on an exchange with another doctor) perform my c-section and she used glue. Dissolving stitches on the inside obviously, but my incision was glued closed instead. My OB was impressed with the incision 6 weeks later at my check up, and the nurse who came around the house a few days after we got home to check on me and Olivier was impressed as well. I guess not a lot of doctors use the glue for c-sections but I have to say its an amazing scar, I only have a 6 inch long (at the max) thin as paper scar that looks amazing. My bff who had 2 sections as well couldn't believe it, her scars are awful. She has scar envy lol.

I'm having scar envy too!  My new OB said she would cut out the old scar and make it much prettier.  Here's to hoping!!

  • I also had glue and no external staples or stitches.  If your OB will use the glue that is such a great option.  I am only 7 weeks out from my C-Section and my scar looks amazing.  Unfortunately I can't say the same for my belly and all the stretch marks covering it.  Oh well... All part of the joys of motherhood :)
