Light-headed after glucose test?

I had my 1hr glucose test this a.m.  Per my doctor's instructions, I didn't eat breakfast before going in.  I ate a protein/breakfast bar in the car right after I had my blood drawn and left the place, then I had some toast and a glass of juice when I got home.  I'm still feeling a little "off" almost two hours later -- like light-headed, but not quite dizzy.  Anyone else have this happen after the glucose test??

  • Yeah... I didn't think the drink was a big deal, but I did feel a little lightheaded afterwards. I also didn't eat beforehand and packed myself some snacks with protein and fat to eat immediately after I left. I felt better in a couple hours. I think the combo of empty stomach + big dose of sugar water is enough to throw anyone off, even if you don't end up with GD.

Of course, then I consumed half a box of the girl scout cookies left in the break room and felt sluggish the rest of the day. LOL. I'd recommend against doing that.

  • Perhaps the sugar from the orange juice pushed you over the edge?  I feel like this after most blood draws though.  But yeah, empty stomach plus nasty sugar drink plus blood draw.... Kinda hard on the body.  Hope you feel better soon.

  • Yes - I felt light-headed and like I might throw up when I started walking around after taking the test. It helped to eat something that had protein and carbs in it - I think it just takes some time for your body to clear all that sugar out of your system.

  • With my glucose test (when pregnant with DS) I felt light headed and nauseous during the hour wait and a couple hours afterwards. I almost passed out when she was drawing my blood. It wasn't fun.

Hope this time doesn't go like that.

  • 100% normal. Your body got a sugar high and basicly crashing now. It is called hypoglyciemia, and some will get light headed even sick afterwards. But it wont last more then a day. I have hypoglyciemia where my boody doesnt produce enough sugar to out way my bodies natural insulin. So if I dont eat for 2 hours my blood sugar can drop to low 40s. If I hit high 30s I have siezers and if I go lower I could die. You can imagine how first trimester went when my m/s was hell. lol I dont have to take the glucose test because of it. By the way I am not a big person at all even though I eat almost every hour lol, I have to have small protien enriched meals all the time. You will be fine in other words :)
