Diaper Changing Drama

What does your DC do during diaper changes? ?DD will cry, wiggle, roll over, try to crawl away - basically everything possible to avoid a diaper change. Then as soon as the new diaper is on, she is happy as a clam. Does anyone else's DC do this?

Re: Diaper Changing Drama

  • yep!  I often give her something she shouldn't have to play with to distract her.  the diaper cream, the hair brush, the nail file, etc.

  • haha yes!! My DD does the exact thing and like Sara I give her something to play with to distract her. So far she loves my empty water bottles LOL! I asked her teachers at daycare if she does this for them and they say that all parents ask them this and the answer is NO!
  • Oh yeah.  Sometimes DS tries to kick me in the face!  The destraction toy is a must for us.  Usually it's whatever I can get my hands on first (hair brush, diaper cream, a sock off the floor....).

No idea why they seem to learn to hate the diaper changes.  DS has had a few boughts of diaper rash, but not for a while and certainly not every day, so I don't think it's some kind of negative association with that.  My only hope is that it makes him easier to potty train.

  • Distraction works for us too.  I will give them a small toy or a book to keep them occupied.  Otherwise it's like WWF!

  • Welcome to my world.  Someone on here suggested blowing on your childs tummy as it distracts them and it really does work.  My DD is very into the tub that the diaper cream comes in so I give her that to play with (top on tight of course) along with other stuffed animals.  At some point, you will learn how to put on diaper on while they are standing.  My 2 1/2 year old stands up, helps me take off the diaper and then sticks her cute little butt out for me to wipe.  Someday she will be potty trained and I can't wait!

  • I asked the pedi this at DD's 1 yr visit and he said it is perfectly normal in their development. It is a little independent streak coming out.
  • YES!! It drives me crazy! If I don't get a hold of DS fast, he will pee on the bed.
