distraction for distracted nursers

so i had an epiphany last night. so many of us complain that our LOs are so distracted while nursing that it becomes an activity that we don't look forward to.

i noticed that when audrey has a stuffed animal, she is much more attentive to nursing. then it occured to me that i'd given nursing necklaces to moms at baby showers for the exact purpose!

this isn't the one that i've purchased (got it at Pink and Brown in old town alex, and it's not on their website), but it's the same idea. the one i bought is soft, chewable and the necklace stretches.

has anyone used something like this: https://www.mom4life.com/mommy-necklaces-dangling-donut-nursing-necklaces.html

did it help with distracting baby into nursing?

Re: distraction for distracted nursers

  • I do!  I love my Mommy Necklaces.  I have 4 and I rotate them b/c I find if I wear the same one, he gets a little bored.  His fave is the Nourish one and I wear that one in the morning when he's most distracted.  Sometimes he is just so distracted nothing helps but nursing has been much better since I started using these about 2 mos ago.  I got my 4 when they were on baby steals for 1/2 off!

  • I have a couple.  I got them on Baby Steals.  But LO would prefer to grab my hair and pull as hard as he can.

  • I haven't tried those specific necklaces but I've tried other things and DS will usually decide to play rather than eat - I guess he just isn't a multi-tasker!

  • I think i have a similar LO to umdbride - i've tried the necklaces and it only compounded the problem. That doesn't mean that it wouldn't work for you, though - i think you just need the right temperament from your LO for it.

  • oh bummer!

the stuffed animal is working really well at our house. she's got her hands full and can't pull my hair, stick her fingers in my nose/mouth/eyes, pinch me or whatever else she feels like doing at the moment.

  • I'm glad it's working for you!  for me, we're most succesful nursing in his room with the lights off and minimal other noises outside the room. If DS hears the dog walk up the hall, etc. he's always trying to see what's going on. I also don't make eye contact, and keep my head raised enough that he can't quite reach my nose, lol.  He seems to be fine to play with my hair or mouth while nursing, unless I do anything that acknowledges that - then he just wants to play.
