refinishing furniture while pregnant?

I've done a ton of research and there are so many mixed opinions about this. I found this beautiful peice of old furniture that we are going to refinish for the nursery, but it needs a lot of work. It needs to be sanded, primed, and repainted. Has anyone done this while pregnant? What did your doctor say? I'm going to ask mine tomorrow but wanted to get some opinions because I started sanding tonight and started getting a headache (forgot to open the garage doors!), so I stopped immediately. But I'm hoping that bit of sanding wasn't dangerous.

What are your thoughts?

  • Do it in an open space, a patio is best, and wear a dust mask. I refinished furniture while I was pregnant with DS, but you have to give yourself air to breathe.

  • I would definitely wear a mask while sanding. I don't think I would try to stain anything b/c of the fumes (unless you could find something with very low fumes), but if you find a no-VOC primer and paint and lots of ventilation, it might not be a big deal. The other side of this is that you don't need to be lifting around on the piece to get at it from different angles, but you also probably need to be careful about contorting to reach all the spots, too. (At least, that would be what I would have to remind myself if I was doing it.)

  • I've been refinishing a dresser and read up a TON on the sanding/staining/priming :)

If you still have sanding to do -- get a nice respirator.  I got mine at a hardware store for around $24.00 -- it's a reusable one that allows you to breathe out but doesn't let anything else in -- it is AWESOME!  Way better than those masks that still allow dust in.  The scary thing is that if it's any old peice of furniture, it can have lead in the finish and you don't want to breathe that in.

They also make no VOC stain, primer, paint and sealer that I will be using -- but I'll still use the mask too.

Good luck!  I'm sure you're fine if you stopped yesterday -- but I think a mask will certainly make you feel better and keep baby safe :)

Thanks so much! I super appreciate all this advice.

  • I was told no staining and no oil-based primer/ paint with DS, just latex in a well ventilated room....but my OB is on the cautious side.
