breast feeding and pumping..

i had ds last wednesday and been breastfeeding since with success (hes fussy to latch but does eventually) anyway i felt engorged this past sunday so i went to pump and hated it.  i have a manual and it took FOREVER just to get even an oz.  it also hurts...   anyway im hoping to get some tips on when and for how long to pump to increase my supply.  i tried right after feeding and the pain was too much (Also nothing came out.)    i use a medela hand pump.  thank u!!

Re: breast feeding and pumping..

  • well if you are going to pump with plans on stocking up and freezing milk then you will probably need to invest in an electric pump. I cant imagine using a hand pump.

make sure that your pump fits you properly and that your nipples are rubbing on the shield part.

i am not sure why it hurts unless there is nothing to come out. Possibly you can try to feed LO, then take a warm shower etc and have another let down then pump and have more success.  good luck.

  • If you haven't seen kellymom.com, I would highly suggest it. It has a lot of tips on pumping and breastfeeding.

I agree with PP, you want a good fit. Here is a good link that might help with fit

It took me a while to develop my supply along with feeding, but always BF first then try to pump. If you plan on having a nice stash, you can even look into a single-pump electric.

  • If you are nursing with success why are you looking to increase your supply?  An oversupply can cause your LO not to get enough fat in the milk when nursing - just an FYI.  Also an oversupply can really be a PIA -- pumping/ nursing ALL the time.

I would say you need an electric pump - double electric would be best.  I had DD last Monday and pumped 2oz in 8 minutes with my freestyle this morning.  I'm only pumping once every morning to store milk for when I return to work.

I would say that even manual expression would be easier/ better than a hand pump - they are really PIA to work with.

     Good luck and congrats.

  • Are your flanges the right size? I have found when I pump if I only push the handle down 1/2-3/4 of the way & pump slowly I have less pain.

  • Like pp's said make sure your flanges are the right size. Use lanolin even before you pump, on your nipples, if you're having pain.  Start on the lowest level. If you try to pump at too high of a level then it will hurt, you'll tense up, and you won't be able to sucessfully pump any milk out.

If you're BFing don't pump too much too soon. Like PP said you don't want to get too big of an oversupply.  Unless you're returning to work VERY soon and need to have the stash completed asap then take your time b/c it will be uncomfortable for you otherwise.

And I agree with pp on the fact that if you are planning to BF and pump to make sure you BF first and then pump whatever is left once LO is definitely finished at that feeding.  I wouldn't recommend doing that more than once a day.  I suggest doing it in the morning since your milk supply will be the highest when you wake up and decrease throughout the day generally.
