dd has had issues the last few weeks. I thought she had a yeast infection. The dr gave her some cream. It's kinda clearing up. Around the same time she got super constipated. We've finally gotten that fixed, but now I think she has a bladder infection or UTI. Symptoms include: She is fully potty trained but has had 10+ accidents in the last week or so. Her urine smells really bad. when she does pee she cries. We went back to the dr and they wanted her to pee in a cup, but she absolutely won't do it. We took the cup home with us. Still nothing. I've been to the home medical store to load up on sterile cups because we go through them quickly with no success. Tonight the entire family peed in our own cups so she could see how 'fun' it could be. nothing. I called the dr this afternoon to see what they could do for her without the sample. They said nothing, but that I should bring her in to be cathed. um, no thank you. So, I need every suggestion you have to get this stubborn girl to pee in a cup so we can avoid the catheter. I feel terrible for her!
Re: how in the world do you get a 3yo to pee in a cup?
Can't they use one of those clean catch adhesive bags? My DD had to do this when she was about 3yo. No catheter was involved and the Dr. had a sample before we left the office--nothing to mess with at home.
ETA: This is the thing I am talking about. I used to sell medical supplies to physician offices very early in my medical sales career. I never met a pediatrician who didn't stock these. I'm not sure why they haven't suggested this yet.
When Keira was little and had to do that they put a sterile bag on her to pee in. I don't know how to describe it, it was like a little sterile bag but it had sticky stuff at the top (like a band-aid) that would stick on her so they could get the sample.
This was in the hospital at the time but I would think doctors could get the same thing.
At that age I would think getting her to pee in a cup would be difficult.
Is she not peeing at all? I'd give her a ton of fluids and wait until she has to go, then stick the cup under. It's not like they need very much of it.
And I'm cracking up at the image of the whole family peeing in cups.
This is what I am talking about. LOL
she's amazing at blocking the cup. She is peeing, but it's either all over the floor or on the toilet with her legs so tightly shut nothing is getting by. I pulled out the old potty chair and set the tiny cup inside of it and she wouldn't go near it. full on tantrum. I put her in the bath tonight because usually the first thing she does when she touches the warm water is pee. not tonight. DH said he hopes she keeps her legs this tightly closed when she figures out that boys aren't icky.
and yes, the image of everyone peeing was pretty funny. ds had a blast!
and she is drinking a bunch. She knows that water will help the pee so she's very well hydrated, but it's not going to help if she doesn't pee in the damn cup!
on my next trip to the medical store I will look for these sticky bags you ladies talk about.
thanks!
Does she have other signs of a UTI? It really isn't something you want to leave untreated, it can get very serious. It is worth getting cathed if that is really what you think is going on- and I am shocked your doctors office hasn't insisted on a specimen.
We did the bag once, this last time I was able to bribe DD to go in the cup. Is there nothing that would make it worthwhile for her? Chocolate, a favorite tv show, ice cream?
Your ped should have the bag you need, and you should be using a sterile wipe before attaching it as well.
Hope she feels better soon!
Don't spend your money on the bag, the pediatrician should carry them.
I would just tell her she has to see how full she can fill the cup. Put some stickers on the outside and tell her if she gets it to the 1st sticker she gets a piece of candy, the 2nd sticker, a bigger reward, like a trip to chuck-e-cheese or something. When we had to do this with dd, I just made a big joke about it like "can you believe it, that silly doctor wants you to put your pee-pee in this cup! What a silly doctor!" and she did it.
Ds has had a cath three times, used the bag once and this last time we were able to just stick the cup under him midstream. The bag should work fine for your situation.
ETA: ds doesn't have UTI issues, he's just been really sick with unknown origins each of those times so they've done a full work up
Did you use a training potty? You could do that or a larger pot that she can sit over? The bag seems really unnecessary to me but then again I've never had go through this with DD.
Good luck and I hope she is feeling better soon!
I just did this with my 2 and 4 year old.
The 4 year was very willing to pee in the cup--even enjoyed it.
With the 2 year old, I had to run (several) warm baths and stick him in, make him stand up and play catch the pee one handed : ) It worked but it was a PITA.
